I would like to take my 1040ST and put it into a IBM xt or AT style case. I would appreciate any ideas on' the best way of doing this, along with how to deal with the keyboard problem. I am reasonably good at soldering, etc so technical solutions are OK. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has done this before! PS:does anyone produce a commercial kit to do this with? I have heard rumors of such... Thanks in advance, Brian Daniels (brian@wolves)

In Germany they have several "TOWER" boxes for ST computers... You can put 520, 1040 og MEGA motherboard togheter with 2 disk drives, harddisk and Power suply into a "Tower" style case... You can get a nice metal case from a company called Radio Service Co. at 19 Sumner Workshops, Sumner Road, London SE15 6LA, (United Kingdom). I saw them at Atari '90 and they looked quite good. They take the ST, power supply and hard/floppy discs etc. and have things like a board which will power up the HD before the CPU as extras. For they keyboard they have a kit (new plastic case, cable and connectors) which makes it stand alone. They case is designed as a tower but there is nothing to stop you putting it on it's side. Prices are high - the case is 130 PDS and the keyboard kit (not needed with a Mega) is 40 PDS. I think they are actually getting their kit from Germany. Wherever they come from, I was impressed! -- --- Frank J Leonhardt -- uab1018@dircon.UUCP -- leo@tardis.cs.ed.ac.uk --- ------------------ London, England Tel: ++44 81 429 3047 ------------------

One uses a custom case rather than an IBM-style, so all the connectors on the ST motherboard connect outside right, including the cartridge port (probably the hardest to get right in a roll-your-own project I would expect). The detached keyboard is built using your own keyboard and a modified version of your original case (you trade in your old one or make a deposit until you send it in, or you can buy it outright). I have seen them installed versions of the kit, and they look solid. The footprint is a bit odd (kind of like a hybrid between an AT case and a Mega?). The Tech Specialities catalog isn't with me, but you can reach them at: (713) 691-4527 or (713) 691-4528 Ask for a catalog: it's a nice one. One caveat: they are not really good at hand-holding, expecting you to either have the technical competence or to know someone who does and who will do the work for you. I'm not sure how difficult it is to install one of these kits. Maybe I'll check when I get my hard drive back from them... :-(.
