[comp.sys.atari.st] Uniterm - ERROR 4:

tiongf@cutmcvax.OZ (tiong f) (06/10/90)

I've just traded in my Mega ST for a 1040STFM recently (I know it's a
stupid move), and found that my trusty Uniterm doesn't work as it used
to. Not long after the connection has been established, the line started
to pick up some non-sense (interferrence??), it gradually increases
until the whole screen goes crazy. The screen swithches to graphics mode
by itself, and unstopable stream of graphic chracters, lines, bellsounds
etc. follows. The program is then run into an infinite loop of one very
same dialog box:"ERROR 4: CONSULT THE DOCUMENTATION", ie. click on "OK"
in the dialig box results in another same dialog box. The reading LED
indicator on the modem flashes like mad, and non of the character that I
press on the keyboard is transmitted from there on.

This problem has never happen to my Mega ST before.

Both the Mega ST that I had and the current 1040STFM uses TOS 1.2, and
the modem that I am using is LIGHTSPEED 1200. I obtained my copy of
Uniterm from the BBS last year, the archeive contain only four files:
UNITERM.PRG, UNITERM.RSC, README.UNI, and README.1ST. It does not come
with the documentation as specified in the dialog box.

If anyone out there have any info, please let me know, or at least tell
me where to look for the documentation mentioned above.

The "interference" seems to just be line noise. Your modem may be wearing out
or overheating and generating the noise on its own, otherwise check your
cabling and make sure everything's secure. (Or your phone line may be lousy.)

The "Error 4:" message refers to the OSS Personal Pascal runtime library.
I guess ICD markets that now.

Which version of Uniterm is it? It should say in the "About Uniterm" menu.
If both machines were running the same version of TOS, it's hard to believe
that they would behave differently in this regard. It's probably the modem
or the phone line.
