[comp.sys.atari.st] G-Dos

FRACHEL@umiami.Miami.EDU (02/26/90)

This is a repost, since no one answered it before:

Where can I get G-Dos? I have never seen it anywhere.

Simple question, someone MUST know the answer.

You can get AMCGDOS.ARC from terminator.cc.umich.edu (35.1.33.8).
This seems to be a PD version of GDOS. I believe there is also a file called
GDOS.ARC, but it just has a text file explaining GDOS, not the binary. There
are a couple of GDOS fonts also on terminator. I believe that the _real_
Atari GDOS is not public domain, but AMCGDOS is.
          Hope this helps.

From Atari. They own it. Or you can buy the commercial G+PLUS
which is faster and better.

One does not "get" GDOS, one receives it (beware of anything like this!).
It is included with any program that uses it. The first thing one does with
such a program is replace GDOS.PRG with G+PLUS.PRG. G+PLUS is a better GDOS,
which does not slow down the machine, allows one to select ASSIGN.SYS files,
and does not screw up non-GDOS apps like the original atari GDOS does. It is
a comercial product (G+PLUS), and costs about $35.

You can't buy gdos. A software product that uses it has to BUY it from
ATARI, and put it on a disk for you. Once you buy one program with it
it available for everything else.
-- I bought Dollars & Sense, and got gdos1.0. AND they only can print
    using using gdos 1.1.
-- Then I bought a CAD program and it had gdos 1.1.

There is a gdos clone, called G-PLUS. about $40.

This is all very well and good, but then how does one go about using PD
programs that require GDOS? Case in point: I have Opus, and would
really like to use the charting functions, but that requires making
metafiles. Actually, I have GDOS, as distributed with my Wordup disks,
but I still lack the META.SYS file I need for Opus. So do I need to buy
a commercial program that includes META.SYS? Or can I buy it separately?
Or is it public domain? I've posted this question a couple times before,
with no response, so perhaps I'll have better luck this time.

You can spend big bucks licensing GDOS from Atari, you can buy something like
Degas Elite that comes with some version or other of GDOS (there have been
several), or you can forget GDOS altogether and buy G+Plus from Codehead
Software...

Atari Corp spend years and years fumbling around trying to get GDOS to
work right, and never did manage to fix it. Charles F. Johnson and John
Eidsvoog (who ARE Codehead) spent a few WEEKS reverse-engineering GDOS,
figuring out how it worked, and more importantly, how it was SUPPOSED to
work. They then wrote a replacement for GDOS which not only worked the way
GDOS was supposed to work, but ran FASTER to boot.

The documentation for G+Plus even comes with a nice tutorial about the way
GDOS works... FAR more than you'd normally get from Atari Corp.

Once again, forget about the Atari product, and get the third-party product..

How can You say that AMCGDOS is PD, if there is clearly a copyright
in the program startup? AMCGDOS is free ONLY for NON-COMMERCIAL usage!
If You want to buy a licence, You have to contact Atari Germany or
the author Arnd Beissner!

I am very interested in obtaining a PD version if possible. However
I do not have ftp access to terminator & none of the archive sites seem
to have it in their catalogs. Anyone tell me how I could get hold of a
copy or do I have to buy G+Plus?

I've seen a number of these requests and replies, but it seems that no one
has yet pointed otu the difficulty involved with GDOS clones. In order to
_use_ GDOS for anything other than screen fonts, you will need device
drivers and fonts. The device drivers are not public domain, and are not
provided with G+Plus. (I don't know if AMCGDOS has GDOS driver clones or
not, but I would _guess_ that it doesn't.) If you just want to draw fonts
on the screen, you just need GDOS or a clone and fonts, otehrwise, you'll
still have to buy a commercial product in order to get any use from it (just
to get drivers).

If you knew this already (as many of you undoubtably did), sorry for repeating
it.

If AMCGDOS is free for non-commercial usage can someone with access to
the terminator archive send a copy of the package to the moderator of
comp.binaries.atari.st so it can be posted to the net for those of us
who do not have access to the terminator archive?

I got G-Dos with the Gemini DEsktop (AMC GDOS) and now I have opus, and
it mentions something about a META.SYS file. I have no idea what it is or
where to get it. I also have an EPSON_FX.SYS and don't know how to
put it in the asign.sys file, so basically.. what do I do and where can
i get/create a meta.sys file?
