This is puzzling. I have not had any trouble running GNOME, JOVE,
MGE, Conroy's MicroEMACS or Daniel Lawrence's MicroEMACS in 512K.

Love to. Unfortunately, neither kira.msu.edu nor frith.egr.msu.edu
seems to exist. I've tried to mail you my favorite version of
MicroEMACS at least four times, only to have it returned by two
Internet mailers (cs.umn.edu and nic.mr.net). If you can send me a
valid address, I'll try again.

I'd have to rummage around on my disk to figure out anything about their
origins, but I've got *three* different versions of MicroEmacs that run
on my 1040 ST. None of them are Jove or Gnome. One of them is called 'me'
and comes with the the Mark Williams C package, and the manual for that
states that it (MWC) runs on either a 520 ST or a 1040ST. The version
I have is sufficiently old that I doubt they even considered a 1-meg 520 ST,
so I'd say that this constitutes a sort of existence proof.
One of the other two uEmacs's ... uEmacses ... versions of uEmacs that
I have is a fairly stripped-down version that is meant to be called
directly from the desktop. I suspect it would fit in 512k. I *think*
it came with sources, but I'd have to check. The third one is called 'em',
is fairly fancy, and my gut feeling is that it wouldn't fit in 512k.
