[comp.sys.atari.st] Compatibility of 1040ST vs. 1meg 520ST

MCCABE@MTUS5.BITNET (Jim McCabe) (07/04/90)

I'm selling my one megabyte 520ST to someone with a 1040ST, and he wants
to be sure all his usual programs will work on my machine. Are there
any compatibility problems between a 1040 and a 1meg 520?

I've had an upgraded 520 for longer than I can remember. Never had any
compatability problems with 1040 stuff, they're the same machine minus
built in drive.

I bought my 520 the first Christmas they were available in the US and
upgraded about 4 months later.

Don't worry about the memory upgrade, worry about the version of TOS. If
both machines use the same version of TOS, and both have double sided
drives, I don't know of any other incompatibilities. I've had an upgraded
520 for about two years (and the 520 itself since November 1985) and have
never had problems. Of course I'm still using TOS 1.0.

I've been using such a system for about 2 years (gosh thinking about it its
probably longer - doesn't time fly) with a fairly large range of software
(both games and applications) and I haven't had any problems. The 1040 and
the 520 both use the same boards, so if your upgrade is of the 'buy the bits
yourself and plug them in' form there is no difference at all. I don't know
about the various 'solderless upgrades' but I would suspect there to be no
problem
