[comp.sys.atari.st] Terminator Name Change Clarification

dyer@math.lsa.umich.edu (Jon Brode) (07/18/90)

Some people just can't take a joke...

The reason why terminator.cc.umich.edu got changed to atari.archive.umich.edu
was technical. The babbling about "negative connotations" and "self esteem"
was a joke.

In short:

The machine where the Atari Archive is located is called terminator. It
was called terminator before the Atari Archive moved there and will continue
to be called terminator after the Atari Archive moves away. It isn't our
name. atari.archive.umich.edu is our name and whatever machine we use in
the future will inherit the name. This allows us to move the archive
transparently. You can use terminator.cc.umich.edu if you like, but one
day it will stop working. atari.archive.umich.edu will work until the
archive goes away.

Now stop sending me mail about how y'all liked terminator better!

Hello, I have a question for anyone with the time/patience to help
me out:

I have a 1040 ST on loan and would like to know what I would have to do
to download from the umich archives - I have a 2400 baud modem, but don't
really know the procedure - do I need a decompression utility? As you
can see I'm really a beginner in this area.

Any kind soul willing to steer me somewhere (anywhere!) will be most
appreciated.

thanks, Peter D.
