And now, in no particular order, here are the games... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arctic Fox $10 Real-time tank battle in the Frozen Wastes. Fight your way through enemy tanks, fighters, sno-cats, etc., to destroy the alien base. Decent 3D graphics. Ogre $10 Command a modern army against one artificially intelligent Ogre supertank. Very hard to beat, lots of fun to try. Chess Master 2000 $12 Billed as the best chess playing program around until Chess Master 2100 came out, this is a great chess program with good 2D and 3D graphics. Easily beats the casual chess player. Carrier Command $12 Long term strategy and real-time tactics; command an aircraft carrier and attempt to take an entire island chain. You drive the amphibious tanks, fly the planes, navigate the ship, all against the enemy carrier who is similarly equipped. One of my favortite games, Carrier Command has outstanding 3D graphics. FireZone $8 Your forces against the computers in various situations. Tanks, infantry, ground effect vehicles, etc. Silent Service $10 Submarine warfare in the Pacific during WWII. Realistic. A great game. Time can be sped up or slowed down to make the lengthy convoy chases go quickly. Star Raiders $8 Fly your starship against the alien invaders. Good graphics. An enjoyable real-time game, Star Raiders requires a joystick. Vegas Gambler $8 Blackjack, Video Poker, Craps, Roulette, and the Slots are all here. Very nice graphics, good sound effects. Populous $10 Play God. In Populous you are the diety of your people, and you are out to control the world--naturally the other deity must be the evil one, so encourage your followers with good weather and farmland and destroy the infidels with flood, earthquakes, erupting volcanoes, swamps, etc. Hundreds of progressively more difficult worlds. Universal Military Simulator $10 Re-create any battle. Written originally as a game designer's tool, the UMS allows you to create pieces to your own specs and have them battle on your own terrain. Battle of Hastings, Waterloo, and Gettysburg come with it. Stellar Crusade $10 Strategy game. Interstellar war is a complex business. Jewels of Darkness $5 Silicon Dreams $5 Two adventure type games. TV Sports Football $12 Excellent football game. Has two complete leagues, you can design your own teams, play other people or against the computer, play out an entire season complete with playoffs and Superbowl. You can control the team on the field or just call the plays. One of my favorite games. Breach $10 You control a platoon of futuristic infantry against enemy infantry, aliens, automatic weapons, and wandering beasts. Empire (Wargame of the Century) $12 The subtitle may well be correct. In Empire you attempt to conquer a planet, starting from a single city. You build planes, battleships, cruisers, carriers, transports, armies, destroyers and submarines in an effort to defeat the computer, which is trying to subdue the same world. You can set difficulty levels from trivial to impossible, with one or two enemy nations. Tracker $8 Real-time, decent 3D graphics. Try to destroy the central brain of the defense computer with your flyer. Kill defense robots with plasma, neutron and quark bolts (I'm a physics type so I always thought this was kind of funny). Balance of Power $12 A complex game of international politics by Chris Crawford. Control the military and political actions of the United States or the Soviet Union in a pre-glasnost world. Nuclear holocaust is the price of failure. If international diplomacy and foreign policy has ever held your attention, this game is for you. MidWinter $15 I just bought this for $65 and then sold my machine. You command a team of people; military and civilian men, women, and children, all defending their snow covered island after Nuclear Winter. The personalities of the characters matter--they interact with each other, and not always well, so pick your team carefully. This is an intricate game, requiring careful planning and good reflexes. The characters are interesting, the 3D graphics are done in real-time, and the sound is good. ST Karate $5 I don't have the docs for this. It's a karate game, much like the arcade versions. Needs a joystick. Top Gun $5 I don't have the original docs for this one either. A basic fighter plane simulator, allows you to fly against another pilot on port 0. Needs at least one joystick. TDI Modula-2 $10 This is the TDI Modula-2 compiler. I have lost the docs, but the compiler is completely menu driven so you don't really need them. If you're looking for an inexpensive introduction to Modula-2, this would do the trick. ST Basic $5 The original ST Basic from Atari, again with no documentation. Menu driven BASIC interpreter. MC68000 Assembler $5 A good book on how to program the 68000 chip. Abacus ST books $15 for the set These books cover the internal (infernal?) workings of the ST.
