[comp.sys.atari.st] MS-DOS --> Atari --> MS-DOS

hpasanen@niksula.hut.fi (Harri Pasanen) (06/26/90)

A simple question that surely has come up before, my apologies:

Is it possible to read/write Atari 1040STE diskettes with IBM PS/2?
         - " - IBM PS/2 - " - Atari?

If so, which programs do I need and how is it done?

Please email,

Thank's

Atari ST 720K disks and IBM 720K disk are 99% identical...
Some IBM don't read disks formatted on TOS 1.2 and older so format the
disk on the IBM if possible....

Only when formated under TOS 1.4 or with a special program writing
an IBM header to the boot block of the Disk.

When formated to 720k (80 Tracks, 9 Sectors) no problem.

You don't need anything but the DESKTOP formatter if you own a STE.
TOS 1.4 and TOS 1.6 finally have a completely DOS-compatible disk format.

I don't think so, look at disk free: Atari says something about 726016
Bytes, an IBM says something about 728112 Bytes free. But the new TOS
versions - thats correct - make an IBM like Bootsector.
If you want to have 100% IBM Disks, you can use Fcopy 3.0.

TOS won't write the last two clusters of a disk---thinks they are
always in use. It can read them however. This was a bug in TOS 1.0
that has been preserved for compatibility. However, that does not
imply that the disk format is incompatible. As far as I know, disks
formatted by the TOS 1.4 desktop formatter are completely compatible
with IBM. It's just that TOS 1.4 can't fill them completely.

For those who don't have either of these newer TOS-ups (:-) try
ps2format which was posted sometime ago. It claims PS/2
compatibility. I've used it with straight old MS-DOS machines.

Hope that this helps. Cheers,
