[comp.sys.atari.st] STe memory

srs@oasis.icl.stc.co.uk (Steve Strong) (07/25/90)

Hi There,

Thanks for the response about having 2.5meg of memory in an STe. The
conclusion was that if you boot with 'simmfix', then it would all be
available for use with no problems. If you boot without simmfix, the machine
will think you have 4meg available (assuming you put the two 1meg chips in
the first two slots). Obiously this could be a problem if it tries to access
the 1.5meg at the top that doesn't exist. So now I have a new question for
you - can anyone tell me how the STe uses the memory it's got - if I got
this system, I would be using simmfix on all my 'serious' disks, but things
which autoboot (games :-) wouldn't have it. Is this likely to cause a
problem?

Please reply be email, I'll summarise to the net.

Thanks

Steve

Hi There,

Thanks again for the response about the memory in an STe. The conclusion
reached was that if you had 2.5meg with the 2 1meg chips in the high
priority slots, then you could boot with simmfix to get a 2.5meg machine.
If you booted without simmfix, the STe would think there was 4meg available.
This would cause big problems because the video memory is always allocated
from the high end of RAM. I was thinking about this last night and came up
with a possible solution: If you had the 2 1/4meg chips in the high priority
slots and booted without simmfix, then the STe would think there was 1meg
available, which is ample for all the autobooting software I can think of.
Booting with simmfix would still give 2.5meg. What I would like to know is,
would this method work? I can see two possible problems:

1. The STe would be trying to access the two 1meg chips thinking that they
were 1/4meg chips - what would happen?

2. Does it matter what order the chips are in for simmfix to work?

Any response on this would be much appreciated, preferably by mail since the
news is very slow getting here. Could some kind soul also mail me a copy of
simmfix, since it doesn't appear to be at terminator. Oh, sorry, its called
something else now isn't it. Shame, I thought Terminator was quite cute :-)

Thanks alot

Steve
