[comp.sys.atari.st] TOS 1.4 and the auto folder

wao@cbnewsm.att.com (william.a.oswald) (07/30/90)

I recently upgraded to TOS 1.4 and would like to know what
programs I should have in my auto folder (I know this has
been discussed a zillion times but...). The types of programs
I am interested in fall into one of two categories.
	A. Programs I need (poolfix etc.)
	B. Programs that improve the environment (mouse
	   accelerators etc.)
I already have UTS III, TURBO ST and others. I am looking
for PD or shareware stuff the fix the 1.4 inadequacies.

Thanks

Yeah, I'm curious too-- anyone know the site and name of a mouse
accellerator and improved file selector box on a PD site?

Bill,

Probably the best set of utilities/enhancements/bug fixes can be found in
the panarthea archives (archive-server@panarthea.ebay.sun.com). The
filename is: binaries/volume8/rainbow. The file includes Poolfix, an
accelerator, and a few others. I'm going to send a nice little program
that allows for moving (as opposed to copying) files with the right button
to comp.binaries.atari.st tonight. It'll show up in a while.

As I understand it, when you move a file, you are actually copying the file
and then deleting the original (if this is wrong, PLEASE correct this). Would
it be possible to make a patch that just changes the directory path of the file
when moving it, rather then having to copy the entire file - this is especially
helpful when the file is large, not to mention if you are pushing the limit of
your drive size (500k left and you want to move a 600k file) or if your drive
is already getting highly fragmented files.
So is it possible, or would the change have to come with TOS1.8 (TOS18?)?

When you are moving a file to someplace else ON THE SAME PARTITION, you just
have to change directory information, you don't have to read the file at all.

Yes it's possible. It's also a standard feature of TOS 1.4, just hold the
CONTROL key down when you drag the file someplace. The mentioned "nice little
program" is only of use to those that have TOS < 1.4.

This is wrong. In TOS 1.4 if when you drag files from a source to a
destination that are different disks, you do copy and then delete.
However, if it is to the same disk, it does not copy! you do not need
extra disk space to do this operation.
