[comp.sys.atari.st] ST disks on a PC - are they readable/writeable ?

iiitih@cybaswan.UUCP (Ivan Izikowitz) (08/15/90)

I have recently purchased an STe and I was wondering whether
there was any truth in the fact that floppy disks formatted
on an IBM PC are read/writeable by the ST and visa versa.

If so, is there anything special which needs to be done - eg. does
one need to format in a special way on the PC?

Any information would be most welcome!

Thanks in advance...

Ivan

Disks formatted on a PC are writable and readable on a ST. TOS >=1.4 formats
disks in a format acceptable to a PC. As far as I know, the older TOSes have some
quirk which does not exactly format disks to PC standards. There are PD
formatters you can use to get PC formats using old TOS versions. TOS 1.6
(on STe) should format PC compatible disks.

Correct me if I am wrong...

Well, I juggle PC disks back and forth between school and my Mega all the time.
I have found best results with a program called ps2form from terminator. It
is a little tos program that formats disks to make them usable on IBM pc com-
patables (including the PS/2's, which apparently have some disk quirks). I
have never had a problem with them. Oh, if your disks stop working for no
reason (ie as soon as you use them on your ST the pc compatibles no longer
recognize them) suspect a virus!!! That is how I found out about mine.
Vkiller 3.something is available from terminator also, and is excellent.
