[comp.sys.atari.st] Decompressing .Z files

dnd15j9z@umiami.miami.edu (Frank Rachel) (08/24/90)

I want to download some sounds from terminator, but most of them and with
a .Z extender.. which I think means a TAR file.. but anyhow, how can
I uncompress these files on a VAX or on my ST?

No, .Z means that the file is compressed with program compress. It's a
unix software and has been ported to many systems, including ST. If
"your" VAX has compress/uncompress program, you can use VAX to
uncompress files. Another possibility is to get compress program from
terminator and uncompress files on your ST.

TAR is a program to pack many files into ine file for writing them to
tape, for example. There is version of GNU TAR for ST too. TAR's file
name extension is .TAR. Don't know about ST version, but a unix version of
GNU TAR can also compress files while packing them.

tar(1) has no default suffix. It is only by convention that most
archive sites use ".tar" to indicate that a file is stored in tar(5)
format.

Just another UNIX hacker and ST owner,

Just use that Compressprogramm c16(which is an 16 Bit Compress for TOS )
you can get that thing(i think it is PD) from my Mail Server if you want it
but first send a mail with 'send help' Just try to get a mail thru

Greetings Wolfgang

PS:the netaddress for my Mailserver is :server@mist (get your mail into the
SUB-Net, there exists another machine called mist on this small world,
perhaps try:server%mist@tmpmbx.sub.org(or just try another way to getto the
SUBNET, there are several gateways for doing that)
