[comp.sys.atari.st] General Questions

hedger@inmet.inmet.com (11/15/89)

I have a few more questions....nothing really hard but your help would be
greatly appreciated:

1) Can anyone tell me about desktop.inf ? Can I mess around with it? What
do all of the numbers in it mean? Is there some documentation somewhere?

2) What is GDOS? When does one need it? How does one get it?

3) I am thinking of trying to write a program that will constantly display
a digital time readout on the desktop and update it every minute. I might
even like to do something like a clock 'icon' like on a Sun. Is this even
possible? I don't want to waste my time if it's just a ridiculous
   proposition.

4) I am interested in joining a network service. I am interested in programming
the ST, C and MIDI and music stuff. Does anyone have recommendations for
which one to join? I would like one with an ST forum and all that.
Which service do you use? Is it expensive? Tell me what you think.

Thanks again,
keith

But in another article writes:

> Please take the ads somewhere else...

Yes, but isn't advertisement from small companies valuable information
in this newsgroup. I was looking for Blitz for 1 month but wasn't able
to locate it, and this "Ad" (which contained the way to build the cable
by oneself) was a very valuable piece of information. Aren't you asking for
a kind of an ad with your first question?

"Ads" for the TT, STe, Tos 1.4, Spectre... have been posted here for
some time now :-)

Be tolerant to small buisness on the ST... it benefits the user.

I have no problem with small business on the net, as long as they don't
ADVERTISE. It is my understanding that no commercial advertising is
allowed on this net. I have no problem with the idea of
information being passed on the net. What I do have a problem with is
blatant commercial advertising. If the 'Blitz' poster had said...
"saw the Blitz stuff last week call xxx-xxxx for details" or something
like this, I wouldn't have had any problem. But when the ad is layed out
with bulletted selling points and slogans and such, it becomes not just
a piece of information, but an attempt to sell something.
Granted, this is my opinion and what we're talking about is drawing the line
between information and enticing to buy.
In my opinion the 'Blitz' posting was a commercial advertisment and I have no
tolerance for commercial ads on the Net.
I did not ask for an ad concerning the networking services on the net, but
rather recommendations based on other users experiences. I asked for this
to AVOID having to read advertisments.
I think it's fine for people to point other people towards new products and
information about these products. The question is- what is the posting
intended to do, inform people or try to sell them something ?

As a matter of fact, I've just gone back and looked at the original
posting and the word 'Advertisement' is at the end of the title line.

Also, the poster has a banner at the top asking anyone to mention him
when and if they call about Blitz.

Sorry, but this is definetly an ad AND is not allowed here.

Hedger@inmet.inmet.com

1 - There is a document which floats around describing all the bits and
pieces of the DESKTOP.INF file. Will have to locate it, but yes you can
message around with SOME of it. Some of it is self-explanatory. Will check for
my copy and maybe upload it, unless someone beats me to it.

2 - GDOS - Get G+PLUS instead if you really want to play with GDOS
applications. Currently only a few commercial packages use it, and only 1 PD
or Shareware package I know of (OPUS - Spreadsheet)

3 - Corner clock - Yes it is possible to do one. Have seen several types
which use digits, and JCLOCK8 is the most robust one I know of. Don't recall
seeing the other kind implemented with the clock hands display. Go ahead. Can
always use another version.

Oh, WOW! I'm not sure what to make of this. I guess I should say "I'll
believe it when I see it," but, just in case, could someone answer a couple
of questions for me?

(1) What is the max resolution for a monitor for a TT?

(2) Would a Mac external SCSI drive attach to the Atari's SCSI (For shame, I
got sick of waiting for the TT a year ago and bought an SE/30..) ?

I can see it now... In another year I could buy a (32 MHz?) TT with unix (BSD
extensions?), X11R4, _and_ Ethernet. I think I'm going to faint! I *know*
it's premature, but I want to believe it *so* bad!
