The new HP DeskJet 500 printer replaced HP DeskJets and DeskJet Plus printers today (Sept. 4). The old DJ printers are no longer being manufactured by HP, and existing ones will, of course, be fixed if broken. Like the old DJ+, the DJ 500 produces up to three pages of text per minute and up to two pages of graphics per minute at 300-dpi resolution. However, the new DJ 500 is actually 3% to 10% faster at producing graphics thanks to an improved microprocessor chip. The DJ 500 comes with two new resident fonts (CG Times and Letter Gothic according to a company spokesperson) and improved font spacing overall. Several new font cartridges have been created for the DJ 500. BEST OF ALL, the DJ 500 has a new non-smearing ink! This new ink is resistant to highlighter. It's also resistant to repeated paper handling. It's resistance improves over time, as well! Note that no special paper is required. The DJ 500 uses plain paper just like all the rest of the DJ family of printers. These new ink cartridges will be available to all DeskJet family and DeskWriter printer owners in November, when the current supply of old cartridges is expected to run out. These new cartridges are REPLACING the old ones, so no modifications are needed to older DeskJet and DeskWriter printers in order to use the new water-resistant cartridges. The HP DeskJet 500 printer lists for $729 and the new water- resistant ink cartridges will list for $19.95.
