[comp.sys.atari.st] Spectre and Appletalk

cmm1@CUNIXA.CC.COLUMBIA.EDU (Christopher M Mauritz) (10/03/89)

I must agree with the person that brought up the subject of a lack of
an Appletalk interface on the Spectre GCR. I would own a Spectre now
if the Appletalk support was included. Almost every job I've had in
recent memory had an Appletalk network and a nice Laserwriter NX II at
the end of it. How I would have loved to have had a Mega 4 on my desk
running spectre (w/appletalk) instead of a wimpy little Mac plus. I
had my current boss convinced into buying 30-40 Mega 4's with GCR
packages until we realized that his Laserwriters would be useless
without the Appletalk interface. (And don't try to tell me that we
could have bought SM804', as they aren't nearly as good as the Apple
printers). So the end result was that he ended up buying 25 Mac
IIcx's. Typical end to a typical Atari story...sigh...

In front of me I have a German Atari magazine (ST magazin; Markt und
Technik, 10/89). Here is an add from Fearn & Musik (Stuttgart) that
sells Spectre 128 and GCR (GCR price is DM725,- (without ROMS) and
DM1025,- with ROMS) In the bottom line of this list there is a line:
"Demnaechst: AppleTalk(tm) hardware Emulation"

I'm not sure what "Demnaechst" means in this context but I think it
gives promises that they are working it. Any comments Dave Small?

A good test of whether or not AppleTalk emulation works is to take TOPS for
Mac and run it or to hook the ST with a Spectre to a GatorBox. If it works,
then I'm convinced, if not, then it's more emulation hype. Although, I do
admit that AppleTalk is independant of the Mac since there are enough
AppleTalk boards for the PC out there.

It has to _have_ AppleTalk emulation before we can see if the emulation
 _works_... 8-(

To Dan Moore or David Small,
What is your status on Appletalk??
I thought I read on GEnie that you had investigated it once.
Am I mistaken??

It seems like instead of spending time on sound you could get
more sales by making an Appletalk interface for the Spectre or the
GCR.

Couldn't you have included an Appletalk interface in the GCR??
Could the DC Port serial io box be used as an Appletalk interface??

There seems to be a lot of demand for the GCR with the Appletalk interface.

Well, just wondering.

Demnaechst is the German equivalent of ''real soon now''.

Demnaechst means "real soon now".

This ranges from weeks to years.

I know of an engeneer, who tried to add Appletalk to the ST. The
prototype board plugs to the Centronics (printer) port and has
Appletalk, Apple Desk Top Bus and Centronics outputs.
Works pretty well with an hacked version of Aladin (the german Stectre
competitor).

The bad news: It's exspensive.

It does not make sense to pay DM 2000 for a Mac-emulator if you can get
a Mac for DM 4000...

Does anyone have any information about getting Appletalk to work with
Spectre GCR? The most recent update (2.65) came out last spring with
rumors and breathings of a future Appletalk connection. Is there any
more word on this? Does anybody have a means by which s/he has found
a way to get Appletalk to work? (additional hardware?)	Thanks

The german Distibutor "Fearn and Music" in Stuttgart has presented it's
Appletalk compatible Slotcard for the Mega ST. It is jacked in the MegaBus-
Connector and applies 2 Appletalk Connectors to the ST under Spectre.
On the Atari Trade in Duesseldorf they presented some Mac's and some ST's
beeing connected under Appletalk. Work's fine.
The price is 550 DM, which is about 300 Dollars. But I heard roumors, that
Dave Small himself has developed a Appletalk Emulation Card for his product.
He planned to come to the Atari Fair, but he didn't appear.

Bye...Mike

There is a 2page review of this Appletalk board in this month's (Dutch) STart.
GEM access to Appletalk is promised RSN.
