[comp.sys.atari.st] Spectre/SCSI question

jfbruno@rodan.acs.syr.edu (John Bruno) (09/18/90)

I know that it's possible to use a SCSI drive with a host adapter on an ST
with Spectre, but is it possible to move the drive over to a Mac and directly
use the partition created by Spectre?

I borrowed a friend's SyQuest drive and formatted and partitioned a cartridge
with my ICD utilities. I made a small TOS partition, and one for the Mac. I
then formatted the "Mac" partition with the Spectre software. Things were fine
on the ST, I could see the TOS partition, and I could see the other partition
when running Spectre. I then gave the drive and cartridge back to my friend
and asked him to try and read it on the Mac in his office. He couldn't see
the partition, the disk was not recognised. Is there a way to swap cartridges
this way? Is there some software for the Mac (reasonably priced, that is)
that will handle the partitions (I had the Mac partition as the last one,
since TOS stops looking at partitions after it finds a non-TOS one.) Does
Spectre use a proprietary format for its partition?

Thanks for help

From past experience (hi Gerry!) the problem might be that the Mac is
looking at what would be the ST partition table and getting mighty
confused. I guess that is where some improtant mac info is kept.

I know you can install Mac hard drives into your system and have Spectre
recognize them so that's an idea. I guess once Dave implements CHANGING
of Syquest drives then you'd be able to take a mac formatted cart and
possibly insert into Spectre (changing doesn't work, right?).

 Enough rambling,
 Marshall

Hi,

Dave Small of Gadgets has informed me some time ago that SCSI disks formatted
on a Mac are recognized by Spectre. I don't know if the other way around also
works. More information should be in one of the back issues of the Gadgets
Spectre newsletter.

Changing Syquest removable HDs works fine, as long as you format them
EXACTLY in the same partioning scheme. Even then, you must clear your
desktop, before reading the desktop of the new cartridge.

Reading removable Mac-HDs directly: only if they were formatted with
the older system 5.3/3.3, on a real Mac. This is only true for GCR
2.65, I was told. In GCR 3.0 this is fix, I understood from GBS.
