The usual causes of this are running out of memory (not likely with the first window, but possible if you've only got 1 meg and have a lot of memory resident software, e.g. a big ram disk), or not having the SHELL environment variable set properly. Check your definition of SHELL in "init.rc" (or whatever the startup file is for the init program you're using). If the problem persists, you might want to try hitting CTRL-ALT-F1 before opening a window; this should cause MiNT to report any system call failures, so you'll get an idea about what's wrong (e.g. a malloc failure means you're out of memory). -- Eric R.
