I am having some problems with a number of files I have downloaded
from terminator (atari.archive.umich.edu). Any help would be
appreciated. Please reply via email.

1) genesis.tos - puts up blank white screen but doesn't appear to
	do anything else.

2) magic - puts up sparkling colors when mouse moves. Unfortunately,
these appear in two places, neither of which is near the
	mouse cursor.

3) quartet - drops three bombs. This one I don't care that much
about since it appears to be an advertisement.

I also have some general questions:

o How can I specify the order of execution of programs
		in my auto folder?

o Can someone give me a comprehensive explanation of
GDOS? I have a copy of it but have no idea
what should be in the assign.sys file. Is
GDOS only relevant if you are running certain
		applications?

I have a 1040 ST running TOS 1.4 with a color monitor (SC1224).
Pretty standard stuff. I'm sure there are simple explanations
for my problems (at least I hope so). Thanks for any help.

Dunno. It works on my STe. Maybe something was wrong during the
download.

Yeah, the sparkling colors aren't right near the mouse; they're at
about "2 o'clock" and "10 o'clock." I think it's supposed to be this
way.

But it sounds good. :^) I don't know about this either. Again,
I'll say that maybe it was the download. Did you turn on binary
before you ftp'ed them? Do you have any TSRs or desk accs loaded?

- o How can I specify the order of execution of programs
- in my auto folder?

NeoDesk 3.0 will supposedly have a command for this. Otherwise,
there are two programs I know of, AUTOSORT and FLDRSRT (Folder Sort).
Autosort is has only room for about 20 AUTO folder programs. I say
'only' because hard drive users usually have more. I even sent the
author shareware money and asked him to add more slots. Well, my
check went through but no changes. :^( So, now I use FolderSort. :^)
It uses up the whole screen and can organize any folder on any drive,
not just the AUTO folder. I put FLDRSRT.LZH on atari.archive; I'm
not sure if AUTOSORT is there.

Yeah, it only works with applications that use it. These
applications are ones that require the use of fonts, although some
programs have their own font drivers and don't use GDOS.

I know someone else answered your quesion by mentioning a program.

But, there is another way which for som may be easier, because you can
do what is needed without getting any more software and learing how to
run it.

Start with an empty "AUTO" folder. Copy the ".PRG" files into the
folder, one at a time, in the order in which you wish to have them
execute. That is all. If you use a RAM disk, it should be first.

Now, *I* will mention a program. If you want your AUTO folder to start
a GEM program, you may have to use a trick. For instance, once upon a
time, I wanted a floppy fixed up with 1ST_WORD word processor, so that
I could just turn the system on and then 1ST_WORD would start. Sadly,
it was not good enough to put the program 1ST_WORD.PRG in the AUTO
folder. That did not work.

However, there is a free program called "startgem.prg" that allowed me
to get the effect I wanted. I copied STARTGEM.PRG into the AUTO folder
last. And then, in the file A:\STARTGEM.INF (or C:\STARTGEM.INF if you
use a hard disk) I had one line of text that named the program I wanted
to run.

Mike,

There are several programs that will allow you sort the order of your auto
folder. The one I use is called "Auto.prg" and is good for just that. You
select what you want first like.. from these files
[1] Pinhead [2] TurboST [3] USR [4] Deskmgr [6]saver [7]50_60
so you click on them in the order you want and you get..
[1] Pinhead [2] Deskmgr [3] turboST [4] USR [5] saver [6] 50_60. Get the
idea. You will find this .prg on most BBS's and also on GEnie.
