[comp.sys.atari.st] Replacement internal drive for 1040STf ?

marks@fquest.fidonet.org (mark spacek) (10/08/90)

I'm looking for information to help me make the right decision. My
18 month old son managed to ruin the original DS/DD 3 1/2 inch drive in
my 1040STf, apparently by inserting a disk and pressing down at the same
time, resulting in ripping the upper R/W head apart. I'm not sure, but I
think its likely that it can't be fixed. Anyway, I'm looking for
information to help in replacing it. Like, good or bad experiences with
different drives. Like, do any drives from other companies other than
Atari work without cutting the case to fit? Like, is there a way to get
an exact replacement for a reasonable cost, or am I better off with
another companies drive? Like, are there certain drives that allow
formatting out to track 90?
You get the general idea, I know next to nothing and feel very
uncomfortable being so ignorant on the subject and I really need to
decide what to buy before my hard drive fills up totally, heh. Anyway,
an information would be appreciated. Or anyone who has an extra drive
that they want to sell. I would actally like to get a second external
drive at the same time.... Information as to the way to go in getting an
external (or building one) would also be helpful. I guess E-mail it to
me unless you think the information would be helpful to everyone...]
      Thanks in advance...
