[comp.sys.atari.st] startgem

fischer@netmbx.UUCP (Axel Fischer) (07/08/88)

Does anyone has a STARTGEM Prg that works with Blitter TOS ?
I have used a startgem prg a long time on my 260 ST but now with blitter
TOS it doesn't work.
I have put STARTGEM in the AUTO folder and the program to start directly
after initializing GEM in the C:\ dir. But what have worked so fine on my
260 doesn't works now.
Problem : GEM boots the startgem PRG correctly, than initalizes the desktop
and ... nothing happens. Normally the program to start would now automatically
started.

If you have such a nice little tool please post it to me.

Thanks in advance !

To get your UNITERM to start when you turn your machine on, you
may put the program called STARTGEM.PRG into your AUTO\ directory.
Also you make a file called STARTGEM.INF and put it in the root
directory. This file has the name of the program that you want to run.
This program you run does not have to be in your home (or boot) directory.
For instance, I like this combination:

	C:\AUTO\STARTGEM.PRG
	C:\STARTGEM.INF

and the .INF file has one line, namely

	D:\GULAM\GU.PRG

I put the startgem program so it is last program in my AUTO directory,
so that it runs after the ramdisk, the screensaver, the corner clock,
and any other good things. When the system boots, I see the icons and
windows appear on the desktop, and then these thing disappear as the
program runs.

I hope this helps.

Is there a version of startgem.prg that works with all versions
of TOS? I've seen a few startgems that work with one version but
not with others.

Having to have a different disk for each different release one wants
to run on is a bit silly. It's easier to forget about it and use
the mouse to start things.

You don't need STARTGEM with Rainbow TOS and I'm pretty sure it works
on TOS 1.2. If not, you can try HEADSTART. HEADSTART works better
than STARTGEM anyway. If it's not on atari.archive, let me know and
I'll send it.

I haven't tried it yet, but the HEADSTART documentation claims it
doesn't work with Rainbow TOS (1.4).

Perhaps I didn't explain what I want well enough.
Let's say I have a wonderful program that I want to give to
someone and want to have it auto boot. If I know the person
will always use TOS 1.4 I can set up the entry in the desktop file.
If I know he will always use TOS 1.2, I can set up the STARTGEM
program. If I know he will always use ... .
The point is, I don't know what he will always use, because "he"
might be different people with different systems.

What I need is a single auto folder program that can determine
the current version of the OS and do the appropriate thing.
It seems rather silly for me to write a large program that runs
portably on all known versions and then have to make different
disks for each OS simply in order to get it to auto boot.
