[comp.sys.atari.st] HELP!! PRINTER PROBLEMS!

smisra@eos.ncsu.edu (SAURABH MISRA) (10/23/90)

I am using a Panasonic 1091 printer with a 520ST and I am
having problems printing with it, especially in graphics print

first, it is leaving random characters when you print normally
(like from a word processor) Secondly, and more obvious, when
I do a screen dump (Pressing Alt and Help) I get a line of
the screen followed by a line feed, so on paper you get the
picture of the screen, except it is striped because you are
getting a linefeed at the end of each line (so it is twice as long in
length on paper) Does anyone know what to do? Like DIP switches or
the like?

Thanks
Saurabh

Hope this gets out... I can't help you on that one, check if straight
ascii files print ok. If so, you probably need to make or modify your
programs' printer drivers to use the correct ESC codes, but read below.

Secondly, and more obvious, when

This is an old problem, back from the begining of STdom. The
screen dump really only works for printers that emulate the IBM
(originally rebadged Epsom MX with graftrax) 9 pin printer series.
You can have a substitute driver for the screen dump in your
autofolder - for better resolution or a different default size or a
really oddball printer - but if you use it rarely, just put your
printer into IBM emulation (with an Esc command or by means of a dip
switch - read by the printer when it powers up). I used to do this
routinely for my Star SG 10 and screen dumps *still* work on my new
Citizen GSX140 (24pin) when I put it into IBM Proprinter emulation.
The problem is that the (emulated - usually 8-) Epsom does not get its
linefeeds reset to just 8 pins down (only 8 are used in the graphics
modes) by the ST's dump code. The same commands on the IBM side *do*
shrink the size of the linefeeds.
In your case, you have a 9 pin printer, so you could just
leave it in IBM mode, which is what I did with my SG10. Be warned
however, most software that needs a printer driver, GDOS programs
especially, was written by people who believed Atari when it said that
the ST was compatible with Epsons. They only give you a driver for
the Epson mode of your printer. You could end up writing or
scrounging a lot of printer drivers.

Good Luck, (posted for the benefit of those who didn't know about the
	    24pin screen dump trick 8-)

I use the same printer and it works just fine, contrary to a previous
followup, I've never had to put it in IBM ProPrinter mode.

The only thing I can think of that would do this is having the pixels per line
set wrong in the ST. To fix it (and/or check it) go to the controll panel
desk accessory and click on "Install Printer", in the printer menu select 960
pixels/line. Now save the desktop (so you will always have the 960 setting)
and then try a screen dump.
