[comp.sys.atari.st] De-archiving

manuel@fornax.UUCP (Frank Manuel) (10/19/90)

Can anyone out there in netland offer me any advice on this problem? I've been
trying for three weeks to figure out how to de-archive downloaded programs and
if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.
I am working from a Sparc1 and emailed panarthea for a list of
de-archiving programs for the Atari 1040ST. Since the problems are always the
same, I'll deal with my tribulations with uud/uue.
This program arrived by email, and the header informed me that it was
uuencoded with the UNIX version of uuencode, so I UNIX uudecoded it. This gave
me the file "dumasuux.arc" which I then transferred to a formatted floppy
using MTOOLS. To be sure that I was not experiencing format-type problems, I
transferred to both a dos(MTOOLS) disc and one formatted on my Atari. Then I
took the discs home and added the de-archiving programme arcx.ttp which was on
a STart magazine disc. I've used the program to de-arc other programs on the
same disc, so I'm sure that it works. All that happens with dumasuux.arc is a
white screen with cursor for about fifteen seconds while the floppy drive makes
serious working noises, then pops back to the desktop. This happens with booz,
zoo201g, pkunarc, shar, and unlzh14. I've also tried it with uniterm with no
more encouraging results.
I've been tearing my hair out now for three weeks and am down to the
last few tufts, which my wife wants me to keep. Any suggestions?
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention: when I tried to de-arc booz I got booz.docwhich had about one readable page, then became a garbled shambles, which just
about describes me at this point.
All suggestion, either by email or post-to-net will be gratefully
received.
			Frank.

This sounds like it should work. Did you ever think that MTOOLS might be
the problem? I can't get it to work on our machines here at work. To
test it out just download an ascii on to disk and look at it. (also,
note that ST uses cr/lf as end of line whereas the SPARC/UNIX system
will be using just plain lf)

On my machine, the SPARC-written floppy's directory looks fine but the
first few bytes are just repeated over & over and the drive makes a
terrifying "chewing" noise (anybody remember the old Atari 810? :^)
Maybe the mtools programs don't handle the FATs right or something.

I have noticed the same problem when using MTOOLS on a sun ss1+. My
atari drive
just flashes back and forth between track 0 (where the fat is) and the
disk
track on which the file starts (reading it over and over and over and
...).
This doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to be annoying.
