[comp.sys.atari.st] Announcing BackupST: a nice backup utility.

edwin@praxis.cs.ruu.nl (Edwin Kremer) (11/06/90)

We're very glad to announce the availability of a real nice
and useful backup program for the Atari-ST: BackupST, written
by Fred Appelman <fred@cv.ruu.nl>.
The package consists of two programs, BackupST and Bfront, and
some documentation written in LaTeX.

BackupST treats a set of floppy's like a stream of data: no floppy disk
space is wasted by creating subdirectories etc. Compare it to the UNIX
"tar" utility if you wish. One of the best things of BackupST is its
powerful restore mechanism (yes, you really might want to restore some
files occasionally :-]). I like the interactive restore best: people
familiar with the interactive-restore-mode of the UNIX "restore" command
will encounter no problems at all using this facility.

PLEASE NOTE THAT...
-------------------
... I didn't write the program, Fred did. However, I like the tool and
offered this means of distribution. Any comment, complaints etc. should
go to Fred Appelman <fred@cv.ruu.nl>, not to me.

BackupST
--------
this is the low-level program that does all the dirty work; this
is typically something that you use from within your favourite
shell (command line interpreter). Yes, is has __many__ options ;-)

Bfront
------
this is the GEM frontend for BackupST: once you've seen it, you'll
never find yourself going back to using the low-level program...

Ok, enough hype, now for how to get this stuff
==============================================

 *****> by anonymous FTP:

	Site: archive.cs.ruu.nl [131.211.80.5]
	Login: "anonymous" or "ftp"
	Password:	your email address (you@your_domain)
Usage: see the ftp(1) manual on your system
	File: pub/ATARI-ST/utils/backupst.zoo
Important:	don't forget to set binary mode.

 *****> by our Mail-Server program:

	1) The Mail-Server can be reached at the address

			mail-server@cs.ruu.nl

	   or the old-fashioned path alternative

			...!uunet!mcsun!hp4nl!ruuinf!mail-server

	2) The Mail-Server understands a couple of commands, all commands
must be in the message body. The first thing you might want to
do is ask it for help:

			send HELP

	3) The Mail-Server will send you the UUENCODED BackupST package
if you put the following commands in the message body:

			begin
			send ATARI-ST/utils/backupst.zoo
			end

That's all for now. If you encounter problems using the FTP service
and/or the mail-server, feel free to drop me a line (by e-mail, please).

		thanks for your time, enjoy,
