[comp.sys.atari.st] STe vs std ST

jlong@radc.af.mil (Jeff Long) (11/08/90)

I have the opportunity to swap my 1040ST with TOS1.4 chips in it
for a 1040STe. The only real advantage I can see to making the swap \
is that I was going to upgrade to 4 meg soon, and it should be easier
with the SIMMS in the STe over an expansion board for the ST.
What I really worry about, is that the ST is a 1986 vintage and
has given me good service and the new STe's are an unknown.

What incompatibility problems are going to bite me??

Are the new STe's shipping with the fixed TOS1.6 chips yet?? I would hate
to trash my Hard-drive with this thing!!

Any and all opinions (short ofshort of the "Buy an AMIGA!!" crap) are welcomed!!

I bought my STe for the TOS upgrade and easy memory expansion. I
wanted Rainbow TOS and I was going to get a RAM upgrade sooner or
later. TOS 1.4 costs over $100 locally. A RAM upgrade, who knows?
It would cost more than I want to think about. I sold my unexpanded,
1988 1040ST for $450 at the end of July 1990 and bought an STe for
$600. So, that's a $150 TOS upgrade. Plus I got all the other
features of the STe, like stereo sound, blitter (no biggie),
4096-colors(no biggie yet), plus a brand new computer. When I want
to upgrade to 2megs, it'll cost me less than $90.

They aren't an unknown. (Maybe to you perhaps.) I really like my
STe. Wouldn't exchange it for anything but a TT. And that includes
a Mac; I'd sell the Mac and use the money for my STe.

If you play games, there are a few that don't work. I haven't had
any compatibility problems with the utilities I use. On the whole,
the incompatibility problems are non-existant.

The problems with the hard drives has been fixed for some time, and
they weren't even due to TOS. I'm happily running a 50meg
(ST-157N-1) ICD hard drive on my BBS with no problems.
