Atari Corp., thge company that spawned the video game craze, is making its
second stab at ethe USA's buisness computer market.
Atari unveilded a PC for the office - Called the MEGA STE - that will sell
for $1799. The plus to this PC is its low price. The drawbacks: At its heart
is the 68000 microprocessor, a computer chip that is three generations old. And
Atari machines do not use IBM compatable software, but programs based on the
less popular GEM operating system.
"We hope 1991 will be the year we start to take a chunk of the US market,"
says Lawrence Siegel, VP of software. Siegel, however, conceeds it's going to
be tough.
As if on cue, one big name Atari fan strolled through the Atari exhibit
here - Bruce Johnston, keyboardist and songwriter for the Beach Boys. He was
in town performing with the band at Ceasars Palace and wanted to take a look at
Atari's laptop, the $1200 to $2500 STacy.
"We're not in bed with Atari," says Johnston. "It's just they have the
stuff."
