Hello! Because this question arises from time to time I'd like to give some hints: Atari Germany (ATARI Computer GmbH, Frankfurter Strasse 89-91, D-6096 Raunheim, FRG, Tel: +49 6142 2090) is selling a complete port of the X-environment for all ST's and TT's. The only requirement is a main memory of at least 2 MB. This port was done by a company in Germany (X software, Marktstrasse 8, D-8944 Groenenbach, FRG, Tel.: +49 8334 1411, Fax: +49 8334 6245). It is sold since Nov 1st, 1990. Below is a pricelist I received last week from X software. The product is called "X/ST/window" and consists of different parts: 1. Computer ATARI 1040 ST/E (2 MB, without Monitor) 1498,- DM ATARI 1040 ST/E (4 MB, without Monitor) 1998,- DM ATARI Mega ST 2 (2 MB, without Monitor) 1298,- DM ATARI Mega ST 4 (4 MB, without Monitor) 1798,- DM ATARI TT030-4 (4 MB, with 14'' VGA Monitor, 48 MB Harddisk) 6098,- DM ATARI TT030-6 (6 MB, with 14'' VGA Monitor, 48 MB Harddisk) 6698,- DM ATARI TT030-8 (8 MB, with 14'' VGA Monitor, 48 MB Harddisk) 7198,- DM 2. The dollar sells today for 1.46 DM which means you have to multiply the prices in DM by 1.5 and add 14% to get final prices (but without shipping). Some words to the software: X/ST/window/SM194 allows to simulate multiple SCREENS on ONE monitor (as is for example the case with the MIT X-Server for color SUN workstations, moving the mouse of the screen produces a second on the color SUN). X/ST/window is based on X/ST/multi a multitasking OS completly compatible to TOS. It offers FTP, telnet, etc. X/ST/window displays only a portion of the actual screen. The width and height of the virtual screen are only limited by the available main memory. Moving mouse to the border of the virtual frame scrolls frame automatically. X/ST/window is yet X11R3. Disclaimer: I haven't yet seen the software nor am I in any connection to ATARI or X software. This is simple a typed in version of a letter I recept last week in order to let the world know that ATARI itself is doing some effort in recovering lost ground. ATARI claims to be selling this soft- and hardware worldwide. Hi, we are using the xwindow software of Atari Germany and have also some experiences with different prereleases since december 1989 (delivered by X software, the developer). Configuration: Atari: Mega ST4, BioNet 100 II - LAN interface, SM124 monitor Hosts: HP9000/3xx systems The software is reliable, the performance fast/acceptable (don't compare it with a SPARCstation). Problems: Sometimes we do have problems with our LAN (campus net). If we have a lot of garbage on the net, the system becomes instable ( n bombs, reset required). But this happens only arround 5 or 6 times a year. Remarks: The Atari side offers only TFTP (trivial ftp, UDP based), but you can use FTP (reliable transfer) if you start file transfer on the host. The transfer rate (filetransfer) is growing from relase to relase. Now: 10-20 kByte/s. We expect further improvement, because we know, that transfer rates above 50 kBytes/s are possible. We reached this rate using the tcp/ip software (ftp) of BIODATA GmbH (the vendor of the interface card). BIODATA offers also xwindow software, but I don't know anything about prices, performance etc. Herbert Almus
