Many thanks to those of you who have sent advice on my drive problem. I put the advice to work and found that: (a) I was able to format a new floppy just fine, and the machine booted and ran flawlessly with that disk -ergo, it looks like the drive *is* out of alignment. (b) when I gave the machine a gentle drop to reseat loose chips (as suggested by Doug Monk), most of the "bombing" problems went away, though a few of the disks still do cause an "infinite loop" while attempting to boot with them (falls just short of opening the desktop - can catch a glimmer of the bee, then it makes a grinding noise and tries again, until I switch ot off). Thus, it looks like I probably have some loose chips as well. As long as I'm getting it serviced for the drive, then, I'll let someone *else* worry about the chips. Thanks again to everyone who helped out!
