[comp.sys.atari.st] 3.5" DSDD external drives - where?

PMR2@psuvm.psu.edu (11/30/90)

I am interested in buying a 3.5" DS external drive for my 1M 520ST. Can
anyone tell me:

--> Where can I get a complete drive? For how much?

or...

--> Where can I find a drive mechanism? For how much? Can I use the
controller board inside my SF354 (SS) with it?

Any info at all on these subjects would be greatly appreciated... reply to

Last year on ST base of FIDO Net I read several postings about doing this...
so I went out, plunked down the $55 on a 720k DS NEC 1037A drive just as
told by several sources. I opened up my SF354, unhooked the drive cable and
the power cable, hooked them up to the NEC drive (lot of fun since the
connectors for the NEC drive and the SF354 mechanism where upside down as
opposed to each other), booted up the system and had my self a much quieter,
and slightly slower 360K SS drive....

I wrote frantically back on FIDO and was told, "Oh, you must have a newer drive
that has the drive side select cut.... better reconnect it, or get an older
drive." I tried to reconnect it by following the mechanism's documentation and
the SF354, but no luck. I found an older drive and picked it up for $15 (an
SF354) and tried it and it didn't work... so if anyone else out there has any
input, both Paul and I would be interested!! :)
