A while back there was a discussion in this group about a nuisance crash (slow death) where pretty much at random the keyboard would stop responding. This would occur most frequently while typing away in WordPerfect. Some people found (as did I) that moving the mouse a little after each keystroke would generally give you enough time to save your file and reboot. Question: Does this occur only with a particular version of TOS? I am encountering this problem now with WordPerfect 4.1 on a 520ST upgraded to 1 Mb and running TOS 1.2. I have an older 1040ST at work running TOS 1.0 and I would like to know whether swapping the two would solve the problem. Alternatively, has anybody ever found a satisfactory solution (software patch) to this problem? And finally is there an archive someplace that saves such solutions to common problems? Eternal thanks to the kind soul that answers my questions! No. - I am encountering this problem now with WordPerfect 4.1 on a 520ST - upgraded to 1 Mb and running TOS 1.2. Recently, while using Word Writer to type papers for finals, I got the phantom typist. Luckily, I was able to still save the document. It seems that the input via the mouse and keyboard is delayed a lot. I found that moving the mouse then hitting a key would make the mouse move a little faster than just moving it without hitting a key. BTW, this was on an STe with TOS 1.6 and one meg. - I have an older 1040ST at work running TOS 1.0 and I would like to - know whether swapping the two would solve the problem. I had the same problem on my 1040 with TOS 1.0, and this is where I first used my roundabout solution. - Alternatively, has anybody ever found a satisfactory solution - (software patch) to this problem? Not me. - And finally is there an archive someplace that saves such solutions - to common problems? I'd suppose the monthly posting for the intro to c.s.a.s would be as good a place as any. On a related note, I heard either here or somewhere (little aliens coming down and telling me) that TOS 3.01 (on the TT) is basically a complete rewrite of TOS. I wonder if the phantom typist would strike on it as well. On the other hand, there was the possibility that the problem is in the keyboard processor. Does the TT have the same keyboard processor as in the ST? -- Ed Krimen ............................................... ||| Video Production Major, California State University, Chico ||| INTERNET: ekrimen@ecst.csuchico.edu FREENET: al661 / | \ SysOp, Fuji BBS: 916-894-1261 FIDONET: 1:119/4.0
