[comp.sys.atari.st] ST Format, EuroNet BBS system's

STT@kcbbs.gen.nz (Jon Clarke) (12/25/90)

Hi chaps,

I am answering a message left in the December issue of ST Format an
English Atari magazine. So anyone knowing Andrew Hutchinson please
post this to him on the net as I am not aware of his EMAIL address.

Andrew, you have asked for sysops to email / snail mail you. The snail
mail is in the post but what with the xmas rush I guess it will take a
 while to hit the UK.

We run a BBS here in Auckland as the header and trailer of this
messages suggests. I would like to know more about access into
EuroNet and carring the ST Format information on our BBS down here.
I already carry several USA based on-line Atari Magazines and
snippets from 'CT' in Germany. So it would be a bonus to our users
to have an english input in this area.

Re: your comments in the December issue. Sorry I have to disagree
with your comments re CI$ as GEnie is by far the biggest Atari Base
in the USA and to my knowledge in the modeming world. For this matter
with the new Star services GEnie has it only costs $us4.95 a month
for all your online time. A lot cheaper than what you quoted for
Compuserve as you will agree. GEnie can be accessed from 158
countries world wide via P.D.N and if you would like the NUA I
will be happy to email/snail mail it to you in the future so you can
pop on and have a look.

Re the ammount of files available in the USA I might add we have over
85000 PD files on our BBS here in Auckland all with free access for our
users to download. Over 1/4 of these are Atari ST files.

A quick overview of the BBS as per your request.

You didn't really mean to say this, did you Jon..?

GEnie charges $4.95 a month just to use the service... everything else
that a normal user would want to access is extra cost, at $6.00/hour.

Even those Roundtables that are included in the Star*Services flat rate
DO NOT include downloading... you can read all the messages you want
in the Scuba Roundtable, for instance, but if you want to download any
underwater pictures, the meter starts, and you pay $6.00/hour.

ALL the computer-specific Roundtables cost $6.00/hour for everything...
messages, conferenceing and downloading...

Of course Bob neglects to mention that this is down from the $12
per hour for every area on GEnie that was in place before the 4.95/month
charge came into effect. As a heavy GEnie user, I find my monthly charges
have dropped about 40% ( The free terminal program they give you helps
immensely too )

Bob_B.

GEnie's Star services are $4.95 per month and that is all the cost.
The normal RT's cost off peak $us6.00 per hour but this is still cheaper,
IMHO than the cis charges. I do use both systems but I donot use CIS
as much as I used to due to the amount of files/news/rtc's on GEnie
fair out number cis.

Have a look at Z

BobR , re the GEnie charges.

Yes Bob I did mean to say the Star services _only_ cost $us4.95 per
month. I agree the rt's off peak charges are only $us6.oo per hour and
it is cheap at that cost.

May I suggest you read issue 551 of Z*Net, and read the Z*Net New Zealand
section. This will give you my views and say the bandwith here.

I for one have had a drop and a BIG one in charges ie my monthly bill
on GEnie with the introduction of the Star Services. This new service
has saved me over $us75.00 per month as email is a star service now.

Happy 1991. See you in the ALL SYSOPS RTC on Page 475 on Saturday the
5th of January 1991 at 9pm EST [usa time] or the 6th January 1991 3am
UTC / GMT.
