[comp.sys.atari.st] TT Desktop

neil@cs.hw.ac.uk (Neil Forsyth) (12/13/90)

This months ST Applications (ST Club) magazine has a review of the new TT
desktop (What else! :-). It's a weird review! The screen shots of the
dialogs have some text in English and some in German. In the same dialog!
The English in the dialogs does not match that seen in the ST World review
(see other posting). Is this the latest in Atari bi-lingual TOS ROM versions?
Somehow I think not. It is probably a pirate copy that has been 'translated'
rather poorly from the German version.

Pertinent quotes from ATARI EXPLORER January/February 1991:

From the Dialog Box column: "View from the Top", by Sam Tramiel:

"Atari brought several TT's to Comdex. Installed in these machines will be the
new GEM desktop, a strongly revised and enhanced version of the ST user-
interface, designed primarily for the TT, BUT ALSO COMPATIBLE WITH PRESENT AND
FUTURE STs [emphasis mine]."

From "The TT Desktop: Hands-on" by the Atari Explorer Technical Staff:

"Though the new Desktop and CP were designed primarily for the TT, much of the
software is FUNDAMENTALLY COMPATIBLE WITH CURRENT ST SYSTEMS [emphasis mine],
particularly the STe. It is likely, therefore, that within the next several
months, the ENTIRE ST COMMUNITY MAY BENEFIT FROM ITS RELEASE [emphasis mine]."

Looks like Atari is seriously concidering releasing the TT desktop for the ST.
My guess is that user demand may be the deciding factor. If you want the TT
desktop, I'd recommend writing to Atari and ATARI EXPLORER. Check the latest
issue for addresses.

I guess I'll use up a little bandwidth too, and put my vote in for a
HD bootable RAM version of the TT ROMS....

I read about KOAS in the ST-magazin (german). KAOS should be a
strongly improved version of TOS 1.4 (lots faster, less buggy). In
combination with eg. Neodesk you will have a system comparable (or better)
than the RAM version of the TT-ROMs.
Does anybody know more about KAOS? (will it be available soon? does
there exist a demo version? what will be the price?)
