[comp.sys.atari.st] TeX/LaTeX info sent to atari.archive

davidli@simvax.labmed.umn.edu (01/02/91)

Recently uploaded to atari.archive.umich.edu: TEX_DOCS.ZOO

This is the file README.1st:
---------------------------------

The files in this ZOO archive provide an introduction to TeX and LaTeX which
may prove useful to the beginning user.

ESSENTIAL.TEX	-	"Essential LaTeX". Contains VERY basic information.
			Run this through LaTeX.

LAYOUT.TEX	-	Shows the page layout for LaTeX. Run it through LaTeX

README.1ST	-	This file, information only.

TEXINTRO.TEX	- "A Gentle Introduction to TeX". Very nice intro.
			Run this through TeX.

These items were in the DECUS TeX collection for the Fall of 1990. We use
LaTeX quite a bit a work, and for a VMS system, the DECUS TeX collection is
-quite- complete! Highly recommended.

I have been notified that the file ESSENTIAL.TEX requires a style file for
handouts called HNDOUT.STY. The DECUS TeX collection includes this style file,
but I have no idea whether the Atari ST collection has this style file. I have
uploaded the file HNDOUT.STY to the atari.archive server, so it should be
available shortly. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Repeat after me:

"TeX and LaTeX source files (with the .tex file extender) are ASCII files."

"TeX and LaTex device files (with the .dvi file extender) are BINARY files."

"I can read TeX and LaTeX source files with any text editor (or even the SHOW
option from the desktop). There is no reason to complain about TeX and LaTeX
source files being unreadable."

[Perhaps after repeating this mantra a hundred times it'll get through to
people....]

Bingo, you are right... But it definitly looks ugly and I hate to
read it that way. How about uploading plain ASCII??? What use is all
those typesetting-stuff, if you never use to read this AFTER you got
everything up and working...

I have ported dvi2tty to the ST, and I will be sending it to
comp.binaries.atari.st as soon as I figure out how to. dvi2tty prints
out a rough ASCII version of a .dvi file, for all you non-TeX users.
That still won't help with .texinfo files, but you can use Emacs to
read those.

What you need is the program called detex. I know it is available on
Unix machines and it might be easy to port it to the ST. I don't know
if it uses awk or anything like that or if it is pure C source code.
Anyway, look in the various TeX archives for a program called detex.

cheers,
