[comp.sys.atari.st] Got a little problem...

bdm@spacsun.rice.edu (Brian D Moore) (01/11/91)

...which is, I can't seem to copy files from my UNIX account here
at school to my computer at home. Admittedly, I'm not very good at this
sort of thing yet, but there must be an (easy) way that I haven't tried
to do this. I have FLASH, and I've got a friend's copy of INTERLINK,
but no docs. I tried logging on to my account, and using INTERLINK's
XMODEM option to 'RECEIVE' a file, but it keeps trying to do so from
my ATARI disk drive. So, what's the mystery?
Some helpful information: my account is on a UNIX-based system
(a SUN, to be precise), but I also have access to a VAX account, so
I could ftp to the VAX if transfer is easier there. The VAX account
has its own phone number, but the SUN requires an extension. Yes, I
have logged on from home, so I'm not completely hopeless (just marginally
incompetent).

                                                         -- bemo

What I usually do is read and write MSDOS Disks on the UNIX System.
Your sun could be able to do so directly.

If you have a Network which is connected to PCs you can try to ftp to
the PC or even mount your UNIX filesystem via NFS. (This all of course
depends on the PC having the right software).

Anyway, I always found it easier to find a way to transmit files from and
to a MSDOS PC. Since your ST can read and write the PC's disks this is
quite convenient.

If you absolutely want to transfer it via phone the easiest way might be
to use kermit (which should be available on the sun as well as on the
vax).
