[comp.sys.atari.st] Specter GCR and 68000 accelerators

kron@aiki.Central.Sun.COM (Kenneth Kron) (01/18/91)

I am thinking about using an accelerator primarily to speed up my
ST in MAC mode. Will it work? How much performance increase?
Which one?

The opinions I gave were mine, the opinions you form are yours.

(the thread asks of 68000 accelerators are compatible with Spectre GCR).

Yes, all of them are. The 68030 accelerators and TT are compatible with it
starting with Spectre version 3.0, shipping approximately now, only; previous
versions didn't handle the TT's quirks (which we didn't know about till we
got one).

To cheer you up, we recently benchmarked a lab version of Spectre 3.1
(don't ask about release date, we just got out 3.0!). It was running on a
32 Mhz 68030 processor, 8 megs of available RAM. The benchmarker was
Speedometer, which seems like an okay benchmarker to me.

The results were that we definitely came out ahead of the Mac IIci,
which is Apple's #2 speed Mac machine. Now, only the IIfx is faster than the
SST & GCR combo.

Hmmmmm. Wonder what happens if we plug in a 50 Mhz 68030 and
oscillator into the SST accelerator. (*chuckle*).

Of course, Apple *always* has its Cray to win any speed contests.
But I can tell you who is going to cost more
in the wallet-tug factor.

p.s. Tested accelerators: CMI, Turbo-16 from FastTech, ADSpeed, HyperCache.
