[comp.sys.atari.st] Atari ST software for sale

mproicou@afit-ab.arpa (Michael C. Proicou) (04/29/89)

I sold my ST several months ago, and I still have a (small) pile of S/W
laying around. I'm tired of looking at this stuff. Everything includes
the original disks, box, and manuals.

     PrintMaster Plus $20
     Balance of Power $25
     BDT C-shell and tools/make $50
     BDT Multitasking C-shell $50
     TDI Modula-2 ver 3.x $50
     Flight Simulator II $20

Prices are negotiable, of course. I also have the Abacus books and a fairly
complete set of STart and ST-log magazines for sale.

My Atari SX212 modem is also for sale, it's worked great ever since I
bought it--but I finally need 2400 baud. I'd like to get $75 for it, but
I'm flexible.

You sell this ???

My knownledge about 1st Word is that this version (not 1st Word plus )is free.
TeX and GNU C is public domain. I don't know about the others.
If I am right YOU should NOT SELL this programs!

Stefan

The Preamble to the GNU License explicitly states that you're ALLOWED to
sell GNU software. If Ken finds somebody who's dumb enough to pay for
GCC, fine. Serve him right.
TeX, on the other hand, is not GNU software. There are many commercial
versions of TeX (who buys one when he can get a PD version ? Probably
people who are scared of viruses).

o.k., people. I've been replying to individual flames as they've been
sent to me (Jens, you could have posted a response to me personally
suggesting a clarification), but I guess this kind of message means I
should correct the ad.

The Gnu C and Tex diskettes were purchased from a shareware company
called Current Notes. They sold the diskettes for $3/disk (Gnu was 2
disks and Tex was 3). They pre-test their disks to make sure they are
installable and usable.. And yes, I am just selling the media (with
the original labels from Current Notes) and software which does run on
a 1040ST. Is this clear enough??

Ken (with flame-suit...gee, I forgot to zip up :-)

If I am right, public domain means you can do whatever you want with these
programs, including sell them for whatever price you want. Also I believe
the GNU software is copyrighted, not public domain. Whether or not it can
be sold depends on what the license agreement says.

In short:

public domain == can be sold
freely distributable != public domain
GNU == freely distributable != public domain

If you have a look at some public domain software and read the documentation
files and such like, you will usually see the author saying something like

>>	This program is public domain and should not be sold for profit.

To me this means pretty clearly that public domain software shouldn't be sold
to make a profit (and if you buy any at profit making-prices perhaps you
should look around a bit better first because - at least in the UK and
Germany - many PD libraries exist which are run as non-profit making
organisations).
