Atari has a policy of not supporting anything that they don't produce.
ie. 2,2.5 or 4Mb STEs are not for sale therefore if they don't work
you needn't bother asking them about it.

The mixing of SIMMS to get 2.5Mb is screwed up by a bug in TOS 1.6. The ROM
code that sizes up memory assumes that both banks are the same size. I don't
know if this is fixed in TOS 1.62. Would Atari care to comment on that?
Anyway the patch is to put a program in you auto folder that checks the
memory configuration and if it's not 2.5Mb make it so, set phystop to
$2800000 and reset by jumping through $4.

It seems that this policy also extends to hard disks. Atari UK apparently
do not entertain STE hard disk problems unless the HD is an Atari one.
While this is sort of understandable they should at least help the HD
manufacturers to get it right if it's their fault. I believe long DMA cables
(>18") contribute to the problem. I'd really like to know if new STEs have
this problem resolved because I can see it hurting serious ST sales.
