[comp.sys.atari.st] DM1: Some Spells...

johnu@syma.sussex.ac.uk (John E Upham) (01/23/91)

There are a couple of DM1 spells that I'm confused by...

Essentially there are two spells to light ones way around.

1. Ful i.e. a magic torch according to the scroll and

2. Oh ir ra which simply is light according to the scroll.

Are there useful differences between these two ?

Secondly the spell for darkness, i.e. Des ir sar: has anyone found a use
for this. I find I can be equally beaten senseless in the full light of
day or in complete darrkness. I must admit I havn't tried this
comparison with all foes but i havn't got that much time to waste !

I havn't tried invisibility yet; presumably i can sneak past things
without being attacked ?

Thanks for any help.

I haven't found a *good* use for the Darkness spell either, and I've found
that the Invisibilty spell doesn't do anything for you -- at least it didn't
confuse the monsters I tried it with. (Maybe they could smell Stamm, or
hear Tiggy giggling?)

For mapping out the dungeon, I've found the Magic Footprints and the See
Through Walls spells to be especially useful. See Through Walls also works
on doors, and can warn you of upcoming monsters.

I'd like to know what the different types of armor do for you. Obviously,
the mithril items offer good protection with much less weight than old
iron armor, but what special protection does Flamebain afford you? And
what's the difference between the armor of Lyte, the armor of Darq, and
plain old iron armor? And what happens if you use cursed armor or weapons?

(Could be that the best answer is the most obvious: they just make the game
more fun, but they have no special effect on the outcome. There is SO MUCH
crammed into DM that the designers have to have left something out.)

John Upham asked about light and darkness spells in Dungeon Master..

The "magical torch" spell given on the scroll in the Hall of Champions is
a very easy to perform spell, suitable for beginning Wizards... the light
it produces is relatively short lived however...

The "light" spell found much further down in the Dungeon is more difficult
and costly of magic, but generates light for a far longer time..

Darkness, according to FTL, will allow you to escape detection by "certain"
monsters... they wouldn't say which ones. I never used it in DM, and only
tried it once in CSB for a particular situation (which didn't work).

Invisibility is an *extremely* short lived spell, even at maximum power.
Theoretically it will let you slip past monsters, but don't count on it.
Also, attacking monsters while you're invisible will result in your getting
attacked in return...

Go home, chuckie.

If you haven't tried DM, you're missing out on one of the premier
applications ever developed for the ST.

Besides, comp.sys.atari.st is for everyone. Even people who don't know
how to write.

I'll bet you think Flight Simulator II is just a game, too.

Everybody stop talking about any Atari ST games...

Chuck Schul doesn't like it.

Although I work at the same university as John Upham, I don't know him,
so there's nothing personal here.

Why should 'game junk' be excluded from this newsgroup? As I understand
it, the area is for all kinds of ST-related discussion except perhaps
for the recently hived-off 'tech' area.

I don't play Dungeon Master, so I tend to skip over messages about it.
I can appreciate that people who have to pay directly to read news might
find messages about topics which don't interest them irritating, but I
don't think we should deliberately narrow the range of discussion.

if push came to shove i would also defend chucks atari revolution
lowercase punctuationless contributions as long as they are balanced by the
occasional leavening of chris mauritz cynicism ok folks i think ive said
enough for now

Cheers,

Graham
