We've had no end of trouble with the Floppy Disk on a 1040ST, about 3 years old now. It gets lots of errors, occasionally munges a disk, and won't re-read the directory when you mash ESC. The dealer replaced it once. We've tried putting the monitor far away (as far as the cable will reach), and putting a shield (grounded window screen) between the computer and the monitor. No help.
