I think that my prior posting for a request for a directory compress routine got a bit misunderstood ! This is what I was hoping for: If you create a whole load of files (say 200 news articles !) in a directory: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ...... 200 ^ (this supposed to represent the directory entries) and then expire a lot of them you will be left with a directory like this: x x x x x x x x .... x x x 100 101 102 .... 200 - a whole load of empty directory entries and the other files at the end of the directory. Reading any of these files takes quite some time for GEM to read through the directory, check that the file exists and then start reading the file. This has been quite noticable for me that with lots of news articles in a directory rn slows down quite considerably as you progress through the newsgroup. Of course, putting some more files in the directory puts them in the empty spaces (I think) so you end up with something like this: 201 202 203 ... 209 210 x x x x x x x ... x x 100 101 102 .... 200 What I want is a nice little program that will re-organise the directory into a 'proper' order or even just compress out the deleted entries. The reorder option of Neodesk 3 does this but a .ttp would be nice 8-) Sorry if I rambled on a lot here !
