[comp.sys.atari.st] 256k simms in a 1040st?

selick@bucsf.bu.edu (Steven Selick) (02/20/91)

I have 4 256k 120 ns simms that came out of a 1040ste. can my brother
use these (and possibly 2 more from a mac) to upgrade a 1040st to 2.5
meg?

i think it would be a lot of trouble---lots of wires to mess with.
a guy in our users group upped his 1040 to 2.5 meg with 2 1meg mac simms,
which turned out to be a (the way he did it) a very neat and compact job.
he clipped out one bank of soldered in chips, cleaned outthe holes and wired
the simms direct. but he only had 2 simms to worry about---you have 4 or 6.

To get 2.5meg with SIMMs on an ST/Mega, you need a JRI SIMM board (I
don't know of anyone else who distributes them in the US, but there
may be quite a few in Europe), 2 one-meg SIMMs, and 2 256K SIMMs.
You cannot use 10 256K SIMMs and get 2.5meg because of the way things
are designed. I would explain the reason to you, but I don't know it
either. Just take my word for it. :^D
