[comp.sys.atari.st] US ST mags

seitz@netcom.COM (Matthew Seitz) (02/18/91)

Just before last Christmas, on a whim, I subscribed to just about every U.S.
ST Magazine. Except STart: I don't think the disk is worth the cost. I did
subscribe to ATARI EXPLORER, ATARI INTERFACE, CURRENT NOTES, ST JOURNAL,
ST WORLD, and ST INFORMER.

So far I've received two copies of ST INFORMER and one of ST WORLD. The 2
issues of ST INFORMER have been excellent. Lots of new product announcements,
advertisements (a plus in my opinion), Atari News, and Product Reviews. The
issue of ST WORLD was a big disappointment. Usually, this magazine has all
the same good features I mentioned for ST INFORMER. Not this time.

All the new product announcements were games. There was no Atari News. Dave
Small's excellent column was missing. There were only two articles on
applications or utilities for general ST users. Of these, one was on CodeHead's
MultiDesk and HotWire and MultiFile, all of which have been reviewed many
times in the past in other magazines. 25% of the articles were on Lynx games,
which are useless to ST owners. All in all, a big disappointment.

So far, ST INFORMER has been by far the best buy.

When ST World (the Oregon based newspaper) started, they were excellent,
because they had the straight stuff long before everyone else had it.

Now for some reason, they have lost that advantage. Their proofreading
has always been miserable, and a couple of columns just never did hold up.
But now, I agree, they have really hit bottom.

Could someone post addresses and phone numbers for most or all of these
publications? I wasn't aware there were so many Atari specific mags
left! My local newstand only carries 'Explorer' and 'STart'... I'm sure
other people would be interested in this info as well!

Since I've had other inquiries as well:

CURRENT NOTES; 122 N. Johnson Rd.; Sterling, VA 22170; 703-450-4761
10 issues/year; $27/year

ST INFORMER; 909 NW Starlite Place; Grants Pass, OR 97532; 503-476-0071
12 issues/year; $19.95/year

ATARI EXPLORER; P.O. Box 6488; Duluth, MN 55806; 218-723-9202
6 issues/year; $14.95/year

ATARI INTERFACE MAGAZINE; 3487 Braeburn Circle; Ann Arbor, MI 48108; 313-973-8825; 12 issues/year; $18/year

ST JOURNAL; 113 W. College St.; Covina, CA 91723; 818-332-0372
6 issues/year; $20/year

ST WORLD; 2463 Latona Ct. NE; Salem, OR 97303; 503-393-9688
12 issues/year; $18/year

Also, I've recently received my first issue of CURRENT NOTES. I liked it,
though I'd place it one notch below ST INFORMER. It has lots of good ads,
some Atari news, some tutorials, some good product reviews, a nice "hands-on"
article on the TT, and a good technical article by David Small on the theory
and practice of accelerator boards.

I take points off for two articles and
a few sidebars that were little more than either self-pitying ("Oh, nobodys
supporting the ST. Doom and gloom.") or cheerleading ("Who cares if nobody
supports Atari here. We know its great! They love it in Europe!"). The
first few of these articles were interesting. Now it seems almost every issue
of every magazine has to have at least one article either doomsaying or cheerleading, without saying anything new or useful. I also take points off for an
overly long game review. I really don't need a 5 page description of a game
to decide whether or not it looks interesting enought to buy.

What I look for most in an ST Magazine is useful information.

In the list of Atari magazines, Matthew Seitz included:

>ATARI INTERFACE MAGAZINE; 3487 Braeburn Circle; Ann Arbor, MI 48108;
>313-973-8825; 12 issues/year; $18/year

As an additional comment, if you belong to an Atari user group which
participates with AIM, you will receive the magazine for FREE,

This is because well over 50 Atari users groups send out the magazine as
their club "newsletter"... for example, my $20 a year membership in
MACE (Michigan Atari Computer Enthusiasts) includes the otherwise $18
AIM subscription. AIM makes the $2.95 per issue magazine available to
Atari user groups for only 50 cents per copy.

They also have a "disk of the month" Public Domain and Shareware disk availab
for an additional $50 per year for independent subscriptions, but they make
the disks available to participating Atari user groups for only $1.00, and
the user groups can put the disks in their libraries and copy them for
whatever they normally sell library disks for.

So... if you have an Atari user group near you, it might be worthwhile to
see if they participate in AIM..!
