My dealer vaguely described what he called "CALAMUS SL".. SOmething to the effect of a "CALAMUS DESKTOP".. in whihc you never have to "leave" CALAMUS... can do all your file duties, run other programs and load "modules" that are designed specifically for use with CALAMUS: spreadsheets for example. I heard mention of "SL" in an article from a EUROPEAN user. CAN someone elaborate on this please.. correct me etc... and does anyone know if and when SL will be available here? Is it already? Thanks kevin ramsiri@blake.acs.washington.edu

It will have many new features, and I'm not sure how many of them I'm allowed to mention right now (I don't work for ISD, but we're friends). As for the "desktop," though, it's actually a modular system. Calamus loads and unloads modules which own their own icons and windows, but work within Calamus with the clipboards, etc., and you can pass text and graphics back and forth. There will be many specialised programs which will run as modules inside Calamus, for different kinds of text and graphics work (Outline Art and the Font Editor are two good examples). Calamus SL will work with colour, use virtual memory (limited only by the HD), and allow multiple documents open in separate windows on the screen at the same time. It also works with up to 256 levels of grey, but don't quote me on that. I'm sorry, but I do not have a date to give. -- //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// / David Megginson david@doe.utoronto.ca / / Centre for Medieval Studies meggin@vm.epas.utoronto.ca / ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The book 'A Desktop Publishing Guide to Calamus' has information on some of the upcoming features of Calamus SL. One of the chapters is devoted completely to this subject. This book is available from ISD Marketing directly for $29.95 (US) or $34.95 (Can), and can only be purchased by registered users of Calamus. This book also has many useful tips on Calamus. I'm sure I saw information outlining the use of 8 bit greyscale on SL, and there were many different screening options for greyscale images. As for the availability of Calamus SL, I think it should be coming quite soon now. I upgraded my Calamus disks last month at ISD, I was told to expect SL around March or April. I know for a fact that the TT has a graphics mode that allows it do display 256 levels of gray in the 320x480 resolution. It may be that Calamus SL uses that mode no the TT to do its 256 grayscale. S.S.
