[comp.sys.atari.st] Gemini 1.2

dh@tardis.cs.ed.ac.uk (11/16/90)

Hmm...anyone fancy posting the german version of Gemini v1.2 to atari.archive?
Just so that we can get a taste of what new features we can look forward too
 when
it's translated to English.

I have Gemini 1.18 and have translated most of the resources to
English. If someone will volunteer to translate the docs on Mupfel and
Venus, I'll mail them the docs, then post the finished version to comp.binaries.
From what I understand, 1.18 is very close to 1.2.

I would like to see gemini1.2 (in german) on atari.archive. Does it
still require TOS>1.0 and at least 1meg? I have neither (just a poor,
broke college undergra)!

P.S. Anyone have a 520STfm with 1040motherboard they wanna sell???!

Hello John,

please! don't post this version, there are some bugs in it. Wait for
the english version of GEMINI 1.2 .

THE VERSION 1.8 IS ONLY FOR BETA-TESTER !!!

If you post it, it is like piracy.

Can somebody please tell me where I can find this mysterious atari.archive as
it doesn't seem to exist at my sight!

Ditto... sorta.

This seems like a reasonable article to follow up on.
(I never seem to catch replies to my articles... HELLOOOO? anyway...)

I have a few questions:

1) Sound ceased to come from my sc1224 while I was playing BLOOD MONEY...
and I had a TWEETY BOARD installed. Is this common? My power supply
was giving me flaky power and it was on its path to death...

When I took the TWEETY BOARD off the sound chip, the sound returned
to the sc1224 (Sorry, but I'd rather have the sc1224 sound than the
    TWEETY).

2) My power supply finally died so I couldn't test any more variations
with the TWEETY BOARD-- even though the sound worked correctly for
about two weeks before it finally died all the way... well, all the
way except for some awful buzzing.

Does anyone know of any method of getting a power supply for less
    than $85?

3) I'd like to try the blitz copy thing once...
I now have a 1040stf with JUST a bad power supply...

I was wondering, is it possible to use the internal drive as an
    external (or 2nd ) drive for my new 1040stf ($325 w/TOS 1.4)?

DON'T USE Gemini 1.18! It have been one of the Beta-Test versions,
about 20 releases from V. 1.2! It definitly includes some bugs which are
corrected in version 1.2, and, like Karsten I. said, it's like piracy!

Apart from this, ther are many new features in th new version:
 - programs can be loaded as 'overlays', so Gemini does not stay in RAM
 - DA-communication-port, messages can be exchanged between Gemini and
   the desk-accessories
 - advanced CLI (mupfel) - features, like pipe, for, manual ....
 - and Gemini comes bundled with some realy nice and usefull applications:
   - treeview: shows the directory-tree in a window, communicates with
Gemini, so you can click on a path in the tree and Gemini (!)
will open a windo for it.
   - chameleon: is able to load, install and de-install DAs, and it may take
a acc-name as command-line, can you imagin what this means?

But, i'm not the one to tell you.

dh@tardis.cs.ed.ac.uk (11/22/90)

ANyone know when the english version of this will be available?
Will it be soon....I'm desparate to see it.

Richard

schultzd@kira.uucp (David Schultz) (11/27/90)

Can somebody give some answers about Gemini 1.2!

1.) Will it run on TOS1.0 (older versions needed 1.2 or above)?

2.) Will it run on a 520ST (older versions needed more memory)?

3.) Is it available in the U.S. yet (I don't care if it is in
German)?

4.) Anybody wanna sell used TOS chips above Version 1.0. Nobody is
really likely to sell 1.4. So I'd settle for 1.2.

Just a poor undergrad looking to upgrade a little. Will TOS 1.2 allow
programs like monSTer (packed with QSTII) to run correctly. It bombs
under TOS 1.0.

I have just uploaded Gemini 1.2 to atari.archive.umich.edu.
Please note that this program is not public domain, but shareware.
The authors ask for as little as DM50, which they really deserves.
Personally I think this must be the best replacement desktop
which is available. It has a very good CLI, can run accessories
directly from the desktop and have the ability to communicate with
accessories if they follow certain protocols.

English version of docs by Ton van Overbeek, TVOVERBE@ESTEC.BITNET

What's new? For all users here a short summary of the most important changes
in Version 1.2 compared with 1.1 (For details on some of the points see
the documentation).

a) Mupfel
   - new environment variable GEMSUFFIX; contains extensions for
     GEM programs.
   - overlay start mode for memory hungry programs.
   - chmod treats fastload and TT bits.
   - new commands prtconf, rsconf, format, kclick and kbrate.
   - history can be saved.
   - improved handling of stderr and input/output redirection.
   - long (more understandable) option names in the commands.

b) Venus
   - overlay start mode for memory hungry programs.
   - an installed application can handle more than one file type.
   - desktop cleanup
   - formatting diskettes is possible
   - several icon sizes are possible
   - xAcc protocol step 0
   - own protocol between Venus and accessories (-> TreeView)
   - new font selector and improved dialogues for icon rules and
     installed applications
   - keyboard shortcuts for objects on the background
   - colored icons
   - text line under icons has variable width

c) Gemini
   - dragging of objects in the console window is possible
   - the mouse is also active in the console window
   - text in the console window can be selected with the mouse
   - fuller for the console window

d) In all programs fantastillions of errors have been removed (and
hopefully only a few new ones added!).
Especially the handling of defective diskettes by Gemini is much better...

For all those Sozobon users I have also included some Sozobon stuff
from the docs which could be of some interest.

- The public domain Sozobon C compiler has an error which in connection with
the extended argument passing methods leads to system crashes. The error
is in the Sozobon startup code and is therefore in all programs compiled
with Sozobon. If you compile programs with Sozobon yourself then it is
quite easy to fix this bug.
The following changes are necessary in the source of the memcpy routine:

17a18,27
> move.l a0,d0
> btst #0,d0 ; odd alignment? sorry, it has to be move.b
> beq lmcp0_c
> bra lmcp0_b
> lmcp0_a: ; O.K., this loop is not very efficient,
> move.b (a0)+,(a1)+ ; but at least it works
> lmcp0_b:
> dbra d1,lmcp0_a
> bra lmemcpy7
> lmcp0_c:
24c34
< move.w (a0)+,(a1)+ ; extra bytes copy loop
---
> move.w (a0)+,(a1)+ ; extra words copy loop

Then you should recompile all Sozobon programs.

I have done it (that was quick!), should be on atari.archive right now,
the files are newdlibs.arc and newsozo1.zoo. See my earlier posting for
details.

Jeff has kindly replaced the old files and put the new ones on as
sozodlibs.zoo and sozobon1.zoo, so you can't go wrong (like I have).

Could someone please post the internet address.
I can't seem to find it on atari.archive.
