Does anyone know anything about recordings of Schubert's sonatas, moments musicaux, impromptus, etc., particularly which recordings are considered the best? I've listened to Brendel playing impromptus & Barenboim assorted pieces -- both very good. Ron Rizzo

I've heard extremely good recordings of Schubert sonatas by Christoph Eschenbach. The real point of this posting, however, is to mention an "oldie-but-goodie". For those willing to put up with a 78-transfer (although a good one) and search out an import dealer, Arthur Schnabel's performance of the (posthumous) B-flat Sonata is not to be missed. It's still available, to the best of my knowledge, on the German Dacapo label (German EMI's reissue label). I found it at Tower records, but any importer should be able to get it. The performance towers above all others I've heard. If anyone is interested, I'll check my copy at home out and get the exact record number. - Greg Paley
