[comp.sys.atari.st] lynx

MAXG@SUVM.ACS.SYR.EDU ("Gerry Greenberg: 315-443-5378") (12/01/89)

I haven't heard too much about the LYNX on the digest recently, but I
would like to say that over the Thanksgiving weekend I was in Vermont
and saw an ad for the Lynx in the NY Times. The ad takes up about one
third of the page and says that the Lynx is available at ToysRUs,
Babbages, KayBeee Toy Stores, Lionel Kiddie City, Child World, FAO
Schwarz, Wards, and CircusWorld/Playland. There's a picture in the ad,
with a big headline and some text about the product. I don't think we
have them here in Syracuse (even though we do have some of the same
stores)...but I'm not really sure about that. Anyway, I just thought
some of you out there might be interested.

Hmm. Nice thing, color, sound, could have been a success. If not Nintendo
had thrown it's GameBoy into the market. No Color, a little less sound,
but astonishingly small, much cheaper (that's what impresses the kids,
i think) and up to now some 20 Games available, far more than for the lynx,
new ones coming continuosly.
Lynx lost the battle, at least here in Austria. Must become smaller and
cheaper and be there before Nintendo builds a color GameBoy.

No, Nintendo hype (reenforced with NINTENDO POWER magazine) influences the
kids. As for being more competitive, you can now buy a Lynx base package
for $99 here in the 'States (versus $89 for the Gameboy).

Portable game system market so far:

        Nintendo Gameboy $89 B&W, 1-2 players
Atari Lynx $99/$149 Color, 1-8-??? players
Sega Game Gear $149 Color, 1-2 players
NEC TurboExpress $300+ Color, 1-2 players, accepts
                                             TurboGraphix-16 games

I don't know nothin' about economics, but it looks like Atari can turn
this into a major rout and kick every other system out of the market. It
all depends on getting more games and good advertising, IMO.

As usual, Atari has all the good games it needs for the thing. It's
an amazing toy, but they don't seem to care whether they sell any...
They've survived up to now on word of mouth, so why not continue
the trend? Who needs big sales anyways?
A pity, it would otherwise be worth developing games for it...
At least the Portfolio is doing well..
I give up on the TT for now...

There are quite a few Lynx games out now. I was pleasantly surprised. I'm
almost tempted to blow some money on one... Maybe this summer...

> Lynx lost the battle, at least here in Austria. Must become smaller and

It *has* become smaller and cheaper. The latest model of the Lynx is about
2/3 of the length, and 20% cheaper. They're also no longer forcing you to
get California Games along with the thing; I'd much rather have Gauntlet III.

I wouldn't buy a GameBoy for the same reason I won't buy a Mac.
Manufacturer's too obnoxious. I can put up with stupid companies like Atari
[ducks :-) ] but deliberately monopolistic companies? No way.

I have been told that Toys-R-Us sells the original package that sold for $179
at the $99 price, but not here in Austin. Every Lynx I have looked at is still
priced $179, and I will not buy one at that price (even if it is a good deal
at that price anyway). Maybe I could work out some deal where someone can get
it at the $99 price and ship it to me and I'll pay him/her back?

Actually, while NEC says that the _list_ price for the TurboExpress is
$250, all of the major chains seem to be claiming that it lists for $299,
and selling it for that (when they can get it). The tuner is another
$90-100. The amazing things about the TE, to me, is that for $250-300 you
get a TE, 6 batteries, and a skinny manual. No games to play, no
transformer, no multi-player cable. For that much money, you would expect
them to throw in the "accessories" necessory to use the thing. I guess
they know that the only people who will buy the TE already own the TG16
anyway. For $99, the stripped down Lynx package is reasonable, purely to
compete with the $89 GameBoy. But NEC's attitude with the TE isn't cool.
They did the same thing with the TG16 for a while, too -- you would thing
they'd learn that people like to be able to use what they buy.

I was watching MTV last night (Hey, gimme a break its been a long week)
when I saw an add for the lynx. The advertised price was $49.99. I was
quite impressed with how cheap that was! Anyone else see this kind of price.

I knew that already (heck, there ain't a piece of non-proprietary Lynx
information I _don't_ know). However, there doesn't exist a 144-player
Lynx game yet, so I don't want to count it so high so far.

(My sources say the ComLynx LAN has no upper limit -- the only limitations
are in the software. The upcoming CHCEKERED FLAG auto racing game is supposed
to support 1-6 players, which breaks the powers-of-two trend currently
existing)

$300 now. NEC announced a price hike a few weeks back. When the TE's return
(any day now?), it will cost more. Don't matter to me, I don't like the
TurboGraphix-16 games anyway.

You are wrong. Atari has been continuously advertising the LYNX. They have about 18 games now with 16 more to come by summer and another batch by the end of the year. I think that Atari will do really well with its LYNX. Also, the Portfolio is selling really well, and now that it sells for $299 U.S. instead of $399...
