[comp.sys.atari.st] Help with MiNT/MGR - I'm confused!!

bill@sugaree.uu.net (Shrubber - one who creates/sculpts shrubbery) (04/14/91)

hi,

I am in need of help with MiNT and MGR. I know that they will work on
my system configuration meets the minimum requirements - I have a 520ST with
2.5 meg and a 30 meg hard drive. I down-loaded the two of them from GENIE,
(which, by the way took forever even at 2400 baud), and am having trouble
getting MiNT/MGR to operate correctly.

Okay, here's the root of the problem... I can get both MiNT and MGR to
start, but each time I try to open a window in MGR I get this "Cannot
get pty" - quite frankly I have no idea what this means and have no
way of finding out. The documentation that came with the two sucks and does
not offer any real information. Heres my second problem; I cannot figure
out way the commands that tell MGR/MiNT where to find its own programs to
work, Ex: "make mgr INSROOT=<directory info> TARGET=<directory info> install"

What I am looking for are clear, simple instructions for setting up and
using MiNT and MGR on an Atari, because I couldn't get what I needed from
the existing docs (thought they were cryptic).

If anyone out there is willing to help, you have my thanks in advance.

P.S. PLEASE NO FLAMING - I'm only looking for alittle help.

I too would like some help getting MiNT/MGR to operate properly. If anyone
has some info, would you please post it. I'm sure there are many with
these problems.

I also had the 'pty' problem. Apparently MGR is looking for the SHELL
environment variable to figure out which shell to run. If SHELL is
not defined or points to the wrong thing, you get the 'pty' message.
I first 'setenv SHELL ...' and then run MGR and it works ... sort of.

I had MANY, MANY other problems with these programs. They may be related
to the fact that I am running TOS 1.0 (520ST with 4M memory).

1) MiNT will not install by itself, especially from an auto folder.
Most of the time it crashes because it can't install the proper
cookie (or something like that). I wrote a little TSR to install
the cookie and I can get MiNT up after that, but it is a major pain.
Sometimes MiNT crashes on startup because, it says, something is
trying to kill it. Sounds paranoid to me.

2) After I finally get MiNT running, I run a shell (GULAM) and set the
HOME, and SHELL environment variables, then run MGR from the shell.
Mgr starts up, but does not execute the commands in mgr.rc, which
is in the HOME directory. When I create a new window, it starts up
a bash shell, but everything is very unstable. The system crashes if
I try to open another window, or give just about any command besides
'cd' or 'ls'. After I open a window, I can see the cursor blinking
over on the left side of the screen.

3) As an aside, what is supposed to be the default bash startup file on
the ST? I can't create '.bashrc' on the ST, and bash.rc and other
	obvious guesses don't work either.

I (and apparently others) would greatly appreciate some help from someone
who has this stuff working. It looks like wonderful software, if it would
only work. Sorry for such a long message.
