If Atari is listening, I'd like to suggest that for the next version of TOS that they get rid of the "8.3" file name format restriction and move to "free form 12 character" names. This should maintain sufficient compatibility with MS-DOS disks because people who want to maintain this compatibility will simply use file names with this restriction, but it should allow those of us who are more Unix (and OS-9) oriented to bridge over on the application level more easily. Even Unix and OS-9 software that looks for final extension generally look for the last dot character, so that's not a serious problem, and those which work on prefixes will finally become practical. -- Jim Omura, 2A King George's Drive, Toronto, (416) 652-3880 lsuc!jimomura Byte Information eXchange: jimomura
