I am planning to buy a Mega STE or TT (I currently have a 1040STFM).
Discussion of the TEAC 2.88MB floppy drive reminds me of one of my
pet plans.
I am looking for alternatives to fixed hard disks for mass storage
because of
1. High cost for fixed storage capacity.
2. Backup problems.
I am thinking about floptical drives (high denstity floppy disks using
laser head guidance about 20MB capacity) and magneto optical drives
such as the type used in the NeXT cube (about 256MB).
I am not interested in the Megafile 44 type drive as I consider the
media (Disk carts) are too expensive.
Speed is not an important consideration, these devices are faster than a
ordinary floppy anyway. (It is the storage capacity I want)
These type of drive mechs are available with SCSI interfaces.
I would like to put the following questions to the Net:
1. Does anyone have any information on pricing, specifications
and availability (in one off quantities) of these types of
drive mechanisims.
2. How hard will it be to get one of these drives working with a
Mega STE or TT? Will the Atari supplied hard disk software be
sufficient?
3. Does the version of the Mega STE that comes without a hard disk
have the ASCI to SCSI converter or does that only come with a
hard disk model?
I will summarize to the Net if there is any interest.
