[comp.sys.atari.st] Wanted: Symbolic math program for novice ST user

dont@loop.uucp (Don Taylor;644-7631) (04/25/91)

I have a relative novice using an ST. I would like to obtain a symbolic
math program that will run on the machine. I was told there is a package
called 'Elcal' but have been unable to track down a dealer. If someone
has a copy they wish to part with, a source for the package at a reasonable
price, or knows of other packages that would do algebra-calculus-etc. I
would greatly appreciate any information.

The machine is a 520STFM but could be upgraded to 1meg if really needed.
It would be a definite advantage if the package were interactive and did
not require compilation of the source, etc.

Please reply by mail if possible
I will try to mail a summary if requested

Thanks
Don Taylor

I have put the PD version of El Cal (called Sub_Cal) on atari.archive. It is
a great program, and received heavy use by me during my undergraduate math
courses. All ordering info is included in the archive. You may find that
Sub_Cal has all the power you need (not much of it is disabled). Feel free
to email questions.

Wait a minute: I thought that El Cal (and therefore Sub Cal) is
purely a numerical tool. The original poster asked for a symbolic
math package. The only ones I know of are form, available for free on
atari.archive, and Maple. Form is very general, but ha a steep learning
curve, and requires that you program (recursively) in its own language.
I saw a post a while ago that mentioned that Maple has been ported to
the ST (~$400?), but I don't know anything beyond that.

The version I was offered, which was a disk set without manuals (I was told
that the Mac version of the manuals was sufficiently close as to be useable)
was $80. Now, that was through the University of Waterloo's computer store,
and I am a FT student there, so there must be some discounting.

But $400? That does seem a little steep (not for Maple, which is an excellent
program, but in comparison to the price I was quoted).

Hear in germany was a package called RIEMANN. I recently saw an announcement,
that a new version, RIEMAN II, will be available soon. I must to take a look
into a magazine and will contact the authors for more informations (release
date, language dependencies etc.).
