[comp.sys.atari.st] TeX

SUMIDA@vax.oxford.ac.UK (05/12/88)

I remember seeing references to TEX for the ATARI ST, especially one
from Germany. Unfortunately, at the time I was not interested in TEX and
consequently no messages were saved. The Oxford University Computer Centre has
recently installed a local laser printer which will process TEX files. So I'm
now sending an appeal for information.

     >>>>> Could anyone on the net help with any information? <<<<<

I will pass on the info to local users.

Thanks,

Brian

I have been reading a lot of information on the net about TeX.
What in the world is TeX? I know, I know, but you see I just crawled
out from under a rock :-).

TeX has been the text processing system of choice for many different computer
systems for at least a couple years now. It's particularly noted for its math
and special symbol handling capabilities, as well as its device independent
output format. The TeX DVI (DeVice Independent) file format is supported on a
large number of devices - dot matrix printers, laser printers, phototypesetters,
you name it. Oh, of course, drivers also exist to display DVI files on screen
for just about any popular computer you can find - PC, Mac, Sun, Apollo, etc...
(Atari ST, of course.)

By the way, Commontex 2.9 is now available on the him1 server. (Address is
35.1.1.43, user pc7, password guest.) Look for "ctex?.arc" There is a readme
in ctex-bin.arc that also describes the other arc files. All files in the
package originally announced by Jwahar Bammi are here, just a bit repackaged
to fit into ARC files instead of tar.

Hello everyone,

I'm interested in obtaining a version of TeX for the Atari 1040ST. However,
I see that there are a few versions of TeX out there like CTEX and STTEX.

What I would like to know is:

1. Which is your favorite?

2. Why is it your favorite?

3. Does it run on a Monochrome 1040ST with only 1 DSDD drive?

4. Can you get decent printouts on a dot matrix Epson compatible printer?

5. What dvi previewer do you use?

6. Do you have to generate your own fonts?

7. Which server has the latest versions.

Thanks a lot. Reply either by Email or posting. I'm sure there are others
who are interested.

Maurice

Hello netters,
i don't know much about this tex, but it's from a guy named Stefan
Lindner in Fuerth near Nuernberg. A friend of mine has bought tex,
bibtex and metafont (of course latex too) for 30 $. I don't know if
it's available via net, but it would be fine. If someone is interested
i can mail it.
E-mail appreciated to so01@dmarum8.bitnet.

Hello everyone

I've been looking for the TeX package for some time, but have been unable
to locate it. I don't have FTP access, to further complicate matters.

If someone knows where I could download this package, please let me know. A
BBS anywhere in the US would do just fine (and if you feel inspired and
send it uuencoded via mail, even better...:-))

Thanks in advance

I was wondering how much memory is required to run TeX? Also, about how
much HD space is used? I would probably want TeX and a dvi viewer and fonts
for the dvi viewer.

Thanks in advance,

It depends... My ST-TeX (TeX version 2.1) eats about 720K RAM, It is fast,
but some of it's defined arrays are too small; font array is absolutely too
small. So, I can run my TeX from gulam in my 1Meg ST. The distribution I got
eats about 4 meg diskspace, but I have carried some more stuff into my TeX
partition (totally 7.5Meg) and it eats now about 6Meg.

If you get a pd TeX (like CommonTeX) and version under 2.99 you can run it in
one Meg (not sure..) but there are versions for 2 and 4 meg systems as well.
(new) TeX 3.0 (3.1) needs more memory. If I remember correctly, you can
run new TeX in 2Meg, but... well, better not to say any more: I'm not sure
about things here..

In general: My ST-TeX's manual says something like: " A wizard can make ST-TeX
run with a single DD floppy... ". You can cut the disk usage under 2 Meg,
but then there is not much you can do with your TeX. It's not hard to make
your TeX system use much more than 10Meg disk space and thats what I'm gonna
do as soon as get a bigger hd... B-)
